Phillip Island: Motorcycling Australia Sunday report

WSBK Supersport rider Broc Parkes.

Broc Parkes capped off a brilliant Australian Round of the World Superbike Championship for the local riders, finishing on the podium in the WSBK Supersport at Phillip Island.

The Newcastle-native overcame a mechanical issue mid-way through the race to come within 0.009 of a second of stealing victory from Italian Luca Scassa.

After leading through the first two laps, Parkes dropped as far back as seventh before making his way back through the field in a brilliant display of racing from the Australian Supersport veteran.

Sitting in third going into the final turn, Parkes managed to take the lead with the finish line within touching distance only to be pipped by Scassa in one of the closest finishes in WSBK race history.

Parkes wasn't the only Aussie to star, with WSBK wildcard duo Josh Waters and Bryan Staring showing their potential on the big stage.

Staring was the star in Race One, working his way to 15th position, before Waters had his moment in the sun, taking 13th place in Race Two.

For Waters the Race Two performance was just reward for a string of impressive displays over the three days of racing.

On board the Yoshimura Suzuki, Waters looked at home at the WSBK level and would have certainly impressed many of the teams looking on.

For Staring the strong WSBK debut will be foundation for his rookie season in the FIM Supersport 100 Cup, where he will ride for Pedercini Kawasaki.

Seven-time WSBK race winner at Phillip Island, Troy Corser had a weekend to forget after backing up his 10th place from Race One, with a disappointing 19th in Race Two as mechanical issues hampered his progress.

Starting strongly in both races, Corser was unfortunate not have finished higher and will be looking for his BMW Motorrad Team to improve ahead of the next round.

Rounding out the Aussie WSBK contingent was an ever-improving Mark Aitchison, who managed 16th position in Race Two, setting him up for a strong debut season on the WSBK tour for Pedercini Kawasaki.

After positive performances it was a sad end to the weekend for WSBK Supersport debutant Mitchell Pirotta, with the Aussie young-gun being forced to retire after two laps.
