ROUTE TO: ANDERSTORP, SWEDEN
The 13th and 14th rounds of the FIA WTCC take place next weekend in Sweden, on Anderstorp's Scandinavian Raceway. This is the first visit paid by the WTCC to Anderstorp, which hosted the FIA European Touring Car Championship five times, from 1984 to 1987 and again in 2002 and 2003.
The event also marks the return of an FIA World Championship to Anderstorp after three decades. In fact the racetrack, located 130 km East of Gothenburg, was home of the Formula One Swedish Grand Prix from 1973 to 1978.
Did you know it? Two editions out of the six of the Swedish Grand Prix at Anderstorp remain in Formula One history as they saw the first and only victory of two revolutionary but weird cars. In 1976 Jody Scheckter and Patrick Depailler finished 1-2 in the six-wheeled Tyrrell P34s. Two years later Niki Lauda gave its only success to the the Brabham BT46B "fan car", powered by the Alfa Romeo 12-cylinder boxer engine and fitted with a fan to enhance the ground effect. The car was banned by the FIA immediately after Anderstorp, but still holds the track record with a lap in 1:24.836.
