Casper Elgaard claims title in dramatic final race
The last ever DTC race was stopped by an accident involving the series' first-ever champion
The 97th and final round of the Danish Touringcar Championship, which merges with the Swedish Touring Car Championship to become the Scandinavian Touring Car Championship, was held at FDM Jyllandsringen and showed that the series could still create headlines and records. Casper Elgaard set a new record with his fourth championship title, while the series' last ever race ended up only having an official length of one lap!
The historic meeting had seen inaugural champion Jesper Sylvest making a comeback to the series to renew his rivalry with 2000 and 2001 champion Michael Carlsen, while another pair of former champions -- Jason Watt and Casper Elgaard -- was also in the field. The latter pair was still having a chance to clinch the championship as did Jens Møller and Robert Schlunssen, and thus the Danish Touringcar Championship kept up with the tradition of not having the championship decided until the final round.
Casper Elgaard had clinched pole position for the first race ahead of Jason Watt, but returnee Michael Outzen had his mind set on perfect farewell performance, and within a couple of laps he was leading in his BMW 320i E46. However, he got under pressure from Jason Watt and was also caught up by Casper Elgaard, and on the seventh of the 25 laps he decided to let them by. The two former champions battled all the way to the chequered flag, which Jason Watt took first, while a somewhat disappointing sixth position behind a well driving Michael Carlsen meant that Jens Møller was out of the title contention.
At the start of the second race Jens Møller was battling for the lead with Kim Morgan, but behind him disaster struck, when Jesper Sylvest made a move in Jan Magnussen's regular Chevrolet Lacetti, which saw his car being touched by Michael Outzen's car, sending the 1999 champion spinning into a tyre barrier. As Jesper Sylvest needed to be transported to hospital, the race had to be red flagged and due to the noice limitations of the circuit, it could not be restarted, giving Jens Møller the win of the shortest DTC race ever, while Casper Elgaard could claim his fourth title.
