Road Racing tech updates for Kershaw

03.04.2010 -- The following includes important tech updates and information of which road racers should be aware heading into next weekend's national event at Carolina Motorsports Park.

1. Stock Honda pipe addition: The RLV R4 pipe will be legal effective at Kershaw. This addition was made due to the lack of availability of one of the pipes currently allowed and to bring WKA into alignment with other road racing organizations on pipe legality.

2. P-51 Comer weight change: Due to a discovery that a technical specification with the P-51 Comer piston valve engine is not in compliance with WKA rules, a 10 pound weight penalty will be imposed at Kershaw and future nationals for any entrant running the P-51 in the classes which the engine is legal.

The specification not in compliance is the intake inlet width on the P-51. All other P-51 engine dimensions listed in the WKA Tech Manual must continue to be adhered to.

WKA will continue to work toward a permanent resolution. WKA feels in the short-term this is the best route to follow for the ease of enforcement and fairness in the piston port classes.

3. Fuel / spec oils: Sunoco 110-leaded race fuel will be available for purchase at Kershaw. All national 2-cycle sprint classes, except CIK and WKA 125 sprint shifters, must run the following spec fuel and oil mixtures. Mix eight ounces of any of the following oils to one gallon of race gas sold at the track (pump will be designated). Rotax engines mix six ounces per gallon. Stock Honda mix six to eight ounces per gallon.

Permitted oils are the following: AmsOil Synthetic 2-Cycle Racing Oil, Blendzall 455 Ultra, Blendzall 4600 Green, Burris Blend, Burris Castor, Motul 800 2T (off-road), Redline 2 cycle Kart Oil, Redline 2 Stroke Racing Oil, RevClean Castor, T.S. Engine Oil or XERAMIC Castor Evolution 2T.

4. Fuel testing: The standard meter reading will start with a -45, replacing the previous -75. This is being introduced to address the concerns following the testing of various fuel samples after Daytona and to work toward the assigned process of spec fuel in the future. This applies to all classes not currently required to run spec fuel.

WKA announces Road Racing District Championship Series

03.04.2010 -- The host clubs of the WKA Dunlop Tire Road Racing Series driven by Mazda have worked together to make the series more rewarding for racers who need to carefully choose the events they attend during these economic times. Thus, WKA is announcing a District Championship Series program to aid the growing number of road racers who only attend three or four nationals per season.

The program consists of three districts with three races per district. The three districts are South, comprising the nationals at Kershaw, Roebling Road and VIR; Central, comprising Mid-Ohio, VIR and New Jersey; and Midwest, comprising Mid-Ohio, Road America and Putnam Park. Since this program was passed after KartWeek, Daytona is not included.

Each district will have its own point standings. Awards will be presented to the top-three finishers in each class in each district providing the racer made all three races in the particular district.

Fifteen bonus points will be awarded to the district champion and 10 bonus points to each racer entering all three races in a particular district. However, a racer will only get bonus points from one district; e.g., if a racer finishes second in the South district and first in the Midwest district, he/she would be awarded 15 bonus points for winning the Midwest district (not 25).

The regional bonus program that has been approved for 2010 remains in place.

Example of the District Championship program: Driver A races seven of eight nationals and wins the national championship but Driver B raced three South District races and had the best points total of any driver in those three races, thus making Driver B the South District champion.

This program has been adopted in an effort to give recognition to racers who can only make three or four nationals a year, add value to the series and add another goal to reach for while supporting the host clubs of the WKA Road Racing Series. The program may also help to increase entry counts at a number of nationals in 2010.

Product awards piling up for Kershaw Gold Cup Money Race

03.04.2010 -- One of the highlights of the 2009 Russell Karting Gold Cup Series was the addition of a Money Race on Friday nights after practice. The popular event, which is for senior racers and runs Briggs Animal Heavy rules, is back on the Gold Cup schedule in 2010 with the year's first version slated to go off Friday evening, March 12, at the Michigan Kart Supply Nationals at the new Carolina Motorsports Park sprint track.

A long list of product awards for the Kershaw Money Race has been compiled thanks to the efforts of Steve Baker. Product awards include the following:

- Three $50 Baker Racing Engines certificates,
- Three Russell Karting t-shirts,
- Eight gallons of oil from Thor Oil
- Two $50 GT Machine certificates
- One $50 Coyote Motorsports certificate and a Coyote t-shirt
- T-shirts, sweatshirts and hats from Comet Kart Sales
- Two $25 Wells Motorsports certificates
- Four $25 American Power Sports certificates
- A G-Man body kit
- TBD from Michigan Kart Supply

In 2009 the Money Race purse was based on the number entries and had a 75 percent payback. The Money Race was tied with Briggs Animal Heavy as the second largest Gold Cup class on average in 2009 with 21 entries per race. Animal Medium averaged 25 karts per race.

Reminder to Gold Cup senior racers: no rim width rule

03.04.2010 -- With the season opener for the Russell Karting Gold Cup Series just days away at Carolina Motorsports Park in Kershaw, South Carolina, World Karting officials need to remind all senior class competitors of one of the many rules changes for the new year.

Prior to the announcement regarding the addition of several local-option senior and junior classes, the competition committee also voted for an unlimited rim width rule for senior class drivers in 2010. This includes the International Pure Stock and LO 206 local-option classes this year.
