Teams prepare to test Darlington

DARLINGTON, S.C. (Aug. 17, 1998) A number of teams in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series and NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division have scheduled tests at Darlington Raceway in the upcoming weeks in preparation for Labor Day weekend events at the track "Too Tough To Tame."

The NASCAR Winston Cup Series teams are readying for the Sept. 6 Pepsi Southern 500, while the NASCAR Busch Series teams are prepping for the Sept. 5 Dura-Lube 200 Presented By Bi-Lo. Bud Pole Award Qualifying for both races is on Friday, Sept. 4.

Dale Jarrett, currently third in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series point standings and the winner of the last two spring races at Darlington, is scheduled to open a two-day test on Tuesday. Scheduled to join Jarrett are NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series driver Tony Raines, who has unsuccessfully attempted to make several NASCAR Winston Cup races this season in Kurt Roehrig's No. 19 Yellow Ford; and Northeast driver Ted Christopher, who recently drove the No. 90 Heilig-Meyers Ford in The Bud at The Glen and the LAR Motorsports NASCAR Busch Series car at Michigan Speedway in the Pepsi 200 presented by DeVilbiss.

Next Monday, Aug. 24, "Winston No Bull 5" eligible drivers Bobby Labonte and Mike Skinner, along with fellow NASCAR Winston Cup Series driver Jeff Burton, will open a four-day run. Burton, who finished second to Jeff Gordon in last year's Pepsi Southern 500, is tentatively scheduled to test all four days, Skinner is signed up for three and Labonte, two.

On Tuesday, Aug. 25 NASCAR Busch Series pilots Lyndon Amick, Jason Keller and Dave Blaney are scheduled to join the test. Amick and Keller are scheduled to test two days and while Blaney is set for Tuesday only.

Additional drivers may participate in each test and scheduled drivers may cancel without notice. A section of the Colvin Grandstand will be open free to the public to witness testing.
