Wells shooting for third straight win in Denver
MORRISON, Colo. - Just three weeks ago, NHRA Federal Mogul Dragster driver David Wells was in the Bandimere Speedway winner's circle after winning his second straight Division 5 race there. Wells and his Blue Bunny Ice Cream/ "Plain Vanilla" team hope to return to that winner's circle Sunday night after this weekend's Mopar Parts Mile High Nationals just outside of Denver.
Wells, who helps run the family's ice cream plant in LeMars, Iowa, has been red hot in Division 5 competition since switching to a new clutch combination at the Lucas Oil Products Nationals in Chicago after a slow start to the season. This weekend, Wells hopes to maintain, if not improve upon the level of performance that brought his Tom Conway tuned Blown Alcohol Dragster the win here three weeks ago.
"We're just going to try to repeat what we were doing there last time," said Wells. "We got a few new tricks that we are going to try, and hopefully, we'll step up. It was running real good, and wasn't having any tire shake at all. It just went down through there nice and smooth. It's nice to go down the track without beating everything up all the time."
Wells also feels that if the conditions are right, 5.6 second elapsed times may be in the picture.
"Well, I'm sure we can run at least the same numbers," commented Wells. "I think the trick here is going to be the weather, because it is going to be hotter. So obviously, that will slow things down a bit. Its going to be a matter of weather, because the altitude changes so drastically with the temperature up there."
Wells, who is currently tenth nationally, hopes to carry the momentum from his last few races into the second half of the season. With enough of a win streak, the former two time Division 5 Champion could very well make a run for the national championship.
"Obviously, we always want to be No.1," stated Wells. "There's a lot of luck involved here, a lot of races to go, and a lot of rounds to win. We're just going to do it round by round and see what happens. We aren't going to count on anything at this point."
Qualifying begins on Thursday for the Federal Mogul Dragsters. Stay tuned to InsideFMRacing.com for daily updates of the racing action from "The Mountain."
