All Star Sprint Race Results - Eldora Speedway (OH) Sun. 10/04/98 By Scott Hall

ROSSBURG, OH - All Star points champion Kenny Jacobs capped his championship season in style, winning the All Star sprint 30-lap feature Sunday afternoon at Eldora Speedway. The final All Star event of the season paid $5,000 to win and was run Sunday after rain on Saturday. Teenager sensation Sarah Fisher came home second, with Chad Kemenah third at the end of the red flag plagued 15 mile contest.

In the 10-lap $15,000 Commercial Truck & Trailer Shootout, Jacobs emerged on top, defeating Joey Saldana by three car lengths to pocket another $3,500. He led all 10 circuits.

"It’s been a real tough year on me physically," Jacobs said after his 11th win of 1998. "I’ve been busted up a couple times. We won here the first night I got back in the car and we won the last night. This Tim Hughes Wheel and Axle, J&J Kriner Engine car is great and the whole gang did a heck of a job all year long."

"Kenny was awesome today, congratulations to him, he ran a great race," Fisher related, standing beside her Mead Carbonless Paper/Schrader Sand and Gravel Schnee on the frontstretch after her best finish of the year.

Keith Kauffman started the United Expressline Doemelt on the ButlerBuilt Hot Seat pole position for the main with Kemenah outside in Jim Harble’s Gambler. Byron Reed and Fisher, racing on her 18th birthday, gridded next. The initial start saw a three car flip on the backstretch with Todd Kane, Dean Jacobs and Greg Wilson involved. All were okay.

Kauffman took the lead on the start, with Fisher in second and Kemenah third. Joey Saldana took third from Kemenah on lap three, and passed Fisher in traffic on lap six for second, just before a Jim Nier stall on the backstretch brought out a caution. Chris Fraley flipped on the next restart, bringing out another red. The restart lineup was Kauffman, Saldana, Fisher, K. Jacobs, up from eighth, Kemenah, Frankie Kerr and Tim Engler. Two more green laps were run with Kauffman still on top before Engler executed a solo flip in turn three, his second flip of the day. Tim Allison hit the wall and flipped on the next restart for another red.

Kauffman kept the lead on the restart, with Jacobs passing Fisher for third and Saldana and Jacobs now battling for second. Saldana used the low groove to block Jacobs, all the time reeling in the leader. On lap 13 Saldana put a slide job on Kauffman, diving low in turns one and two and drifting high up in front of Kauffman exiting turn two. Kauffman rammed into the rear of Saldana in the middle of the back straight, pushing Saldana sideways into the inside cement wall and ending his race.

After the restart, Jacobs, now second, dove under Kauffman going down the backstretch to take the lead, with Kauffman second and Fisher now third. By lap 17, Kauffman’s top wing sideboard had collapsed, allowing Fisher to get by for second as Jacobs stretched his lead. As the rest of the race went all green, Jacobs won by half a lap over Fisher, who equaled her best career All Star finish. Kemenah ran a steady third, with Frankie Kerr riding home fourth. Brian Paulus started 11th and finished fifth, followed by Nier, Kauffman, Dwain Leiber, Dave Freed and Rob Chaney.

Commercial Truck & Trailer Shootout

In the 10 lap Commercial Truck & Trailer Shootout dash for $3,500 to win, Joey Saldana started on the pole, with Kenny Jacobs alongside. Row two gridded Frankie Kerr, with Keith Kauffman next. Kevin Huntley and Brian Paulus comprised row three, with Sarah Fisher, Chad Kemenah, Dean Jacobs and Brian Smith in the Hampshire 63 completing the field. Saldana took the lead for two turns until Jacobs went low in turns three and for to lead at the conclusion of lap one. Saldana stayed close and used every inch of Eldora’s surface to try and mount a challenge, but he could not close once Jacobs went by. Kauffman ran third the whole race, with Kerr fourth and Huntley fifth. Kemenah and Paulus did the only passing in the middle of the race, trading sixth several times until Kemenah prevailed. Fisher finished eighth with Smith and D. Jacobs both dropping out.

The United Expressline heat fell to K. Jacobs, the Southwest Expressline heat to Dwain Leiber, the Southwest Glass heat was won by Dave Freed and the United Specialties heat went to Chris Fraley. Tim Allison was the United Expressline B Main winner. Engler and Steve Suever got tangled up at the start of the third heat, with both flipping wildly. Each driver was okay. Kenny Jacobs’ time trial lap of 12.884 seconds was a new Eldora all-time track record. In a pre-race ceremony on the frontstretch victory platform, sprint driver Chris Simon got married, the third wedding at Eldora this season. Kris Patterson won the ALMS Late model feature.
