BLOOMINGTON, IN (August 14, 2004) -- Although it's mid-August, it felt more like mid-October. The weather was cool; but the racing was hot. Many of our regular racers were in a particularly good humor after having run well at Mopar Thunder at Eldora Speedway. Dan Roberts' teams did especially well. Pup Huntley won the $50,000 first place money and Davey Ray finished fourth. Roberts was grinning from ear to ear as his teams prepared for action last night. Danny gave his crew chief a lot of credit. Darrell Tate has been well known around Bloomington Speedway for years. Roberts commented, "Hiring Darrell was probably the smartest thing I ever did. He does our engines. He selects our tires. He does it all. There are guys that are great crew chiefs; but very few of them do it all."

Roberts would never take any credit for himself; but before we stop bragging about our own, we really need to say a little about the sportsman Roberts is. Danny has a successful business; and he works pretty hard at it; but he loves going racing. He buys good equipment and he hires good drivers. He's hired Darrell Tate to make it all work together. We all know about the Pup; and he's great. However, Davey Ray is new to many of our fans; but he's scrapping every lap. He'll give us many exciting weekends before his career is done.

SPRINT CARS --

Justin Marvel was the second car out to qualify; and he set quick time followed by Kevin Briscoe, Bobby Stines, Kurt Gross, Kevin Chambers, and Tom Busch.

Davey Ray, Kent Christian, and Bryan Clauson won the heat races

Bobby Stines and Kurt Gross ran first and second for the entire race in the "B" Feature. At about the same time that Stines took the checkered flag, Randy Donelson flipped in turn 2. Fortunately Donelson was uninjured. Gross finished second trailed by Kenny Carmichael, Jr., Kenny Carmichael, and Kyle Nicholas.

When the green flag dropped to start the sprint car feature Tom Busch jumped out to a commanding lead. While Busch has primarily been a winged driver, lately he's been doing a lot more racing without a wing; and it looks like he's getting the hang of it. When you're racing Kevin Briscoe at Bloomington Speedway, a lead can never be big enough. You may beat Briscoe; but you're going to have to beat him. And, he's not going to make it easy for you. Last night Briscoe took second on the fifth circuit; but Busch had built up a big lead while Briscoe was working his way through some very fast traffic. Just then the yellow flag waved for Rick Vaughn as he rolled to a stop in turn 2. This put Briscoe right behind Busch. Briscoe needed three more laps to get past Busch to take the lead. Briscoe had the lead; but Busch didn't give up. He managed to get the lead back for the 11th circuit: However, Briscoe recaptured the lead for the following lap; and he never looked back. However, Busch held on to second. Although he didn't win, Busch drove the best race that most of us had seen had seen Tom run.

Kevin Huntley drove from his 8th place starting position to finish third ahead of Kent Christian who came from 14th take fourth. Justin Marvel came home fifth.

Bryan Clauson had an uncharacteristically poor qualification run. He was 21st fast. He won his heat race going away; however, he would start the feature dead last. He brought the 7X home sixth. That was well short of what he is used to doing; but it was much better than it might have been starting so far back.

Kurt Gross, Kevin Chambers, Josh Cunningham, and Davey Ray rounded out the top ten.

O'NEAL WOOD PRODUCTS MODIFIEDS --

Jesse Cramer has been running well all over the state. He has won features. He is up near the top of UMP points in Indiana. However, he had, until tonight, been unable to find his way to victory lane at Bloomington Speedway. Last night it all came together for Jesse. He came from his fourth place starting position to win his heat. J.P. Hume and Clint DeMoss took the other two heats.

Jerry Davis started third in the "B" feature; but he was leading the race by the time the first lap went into the books. He drove on to a convincing victory. Nathan Voorhies was in the Short car normally driven by Lee Hobbs. He charged from his eighth place starting position to finish. second.

Clint DeMoss took the dash ahead of Cramer and J.P. Hume.

Cramer passed pole sitter Clint DeMoss on the third circuit to take the lead Cramer held the point until the halfway point when defending O'Neal Wood Products modified champion slipped past him to take the point. Cramer battled with Miles for the balance of the race; and, on th 21st lap, he was able to get past Miles to recapture the lead. He went on to lead the balance of the race. Miles would have to settle for second place.

Ray Humphrey started tenth; and, by the third lap, he was running seventh. On the sixth lap, Ray took third place and ran there for the rest of the distance. Points leader Brady Short started the feature fourth and held his own for the entire distance. It was, of course, not the result that he was seeking; but he salvaged a fourth place finish; and the car would roll back onto the trailer at the end of the evening. Sometimes you have to settle for that.

J.P. Hume, Gary Barrow, Rodney Harris, Jr., Michael Sterrett, Nathan Voorhies, and Mike Phillips rounded out the top ten. Phillips earned hard charger honors after starting last and finishing tenth.

TIRE & WHEEL CENTER SUPER STOCKS --

Last night was almost certainly the biggest night of Tom Ault's racing career so far. He drew well and started on the pole in his heat. He won his heat and finished second in the dash. He went on to lead the feature flag to flag. He had plenty of pressure from Mike Cawood for most of the race; but he drove on to take his first win. It's a cinch that there was a lot of celebrating in Freetown last night.

Greg Kendall has been running in tough luck for the past few week. However, things seemed to turn around for him at least a little last night. He won his heat. He ran in the battle for the win for the entire distance; and he finally got past Cawood to take second with three laps to go; but he was unable to get past Ault. He had to settle for second. Chris Hillman came home third.

Danny Harris came from deep in the field to finish fourth ahead of Mike Cawood, Chris Deweese, Ben DuBois, Anthony Walker, Kent Robinson, and Kevin Arthur.

In preliminary action Chris Deweese, Mike Cawood, Greg Kendall, and Tom Ault won the heat races while Lloyd Bumgardner won the B Feature. Mike Cawood took the dash.
