Angelette tops ASCS Gulf South at Leesville

LEESVILLE, Lou. (July 18, 2003) - Defending American Sprint Car Series Gulf South Region champion Kelly Angelette slipped past Scottie McDonald on the 18th round and went on to win Friday night's 25-lap ASCS Gulf South Region feature at Leesville 171 Speedway.

McDonald and Richard Cordray swapped the lead several times in the early going before Cordray spun while trying to regain the point. Cordray's evening came to an end when he flipped after tangling with Jimmy Brooks on the ensuing restart.

As action resumed, Angelette dove to the low side in turn two on the 18th round and raced past McDonald to snare the lead. Angelette raced to the checkered flag aboard his TK Motorsports-powered Southern Trailer Works/Big Tex Trailers Maxim, holding off a late charge from Greg Rilat to post his second triumph of the season.

McDonald settled for third, with Brandon Berryman and Brad Stokes rounding out the top five. Completing the top ten were Chris Sweeney, Sam Hafertepe, Jr., Rod Craddock, Todd Johnson and Stephen Chevallier.

McDonald, Cordray, Stokes and Ty Johnson topped heat race action, with Cordray winning the Dash for Cash.
