IPSC: Copenhagen Inc./Ultramar Corner Stores Pole Challenge Returns

(May 1) - One of the most well-received Competitor Bonus Award programs ever launched in Atlantic Canada, the Copenhagen Inc./ Ultramar Corner Stores Pole Challenge, will return as the International Pro Stock Challenge (IPSC) kicks off the 2000 season this Saturday, May 6th, at Scotia Speedworld in Halifax, Nova Scotia with The Daily News 150. As much as $15,000 (CDN) could be paid out with the program over the season, in addition to posted event purses which now exceed $32,000 U.S. for this race alone.

"It was very exciting last year," said Kim MacDonald of Copenhagen Inc. "The spectators really got into it. They were watching the driver who took the challenge more than the leaders! We're glad to be back."

The Copenhagen Inc./ Ultramar Corner Stores Pole Challenge sees the driver who earns the first place on the starting grid for the feature event offered the opportunity to relinquish their starting spot at the front of the pack for one at the rear of the pack. Should they win the race, they win a $3,000 (CDN) bonus in addition to the $5,000 U.S. guaranteed the winner. In the event they do not win, they will receive a $100 bonus per position gained, i.e. 24th to 1st $2,300. If they decide not to accept the challenge, the second place starter gets the option, with the offer going back as far as fifth on the starting grid.

In 1999, the inaugural year for the Copenhagen Inc./ Ultramar Corner Stores Pole Challenge, the offer was made three times and accepted twice, first by Dan Eddy of Dartmouth, NS, then by John Flemming of Halifax, NS. Eddy advanced to 8th and Flemming all the way to second, finishing only a car length behind the race winner. Newspaper headlines featured "Feisty Flemming" before mentioning race winner Scott Fraser. Flemming's total winnings were more than Fraser's.

"It was great," said Flemming, whose Copenhagen Inc./ Ultramar Corner Stores Pole Challenge winnings contributed to the biggest payday of his racing career. "I can't wait for this weekend. I just hope I get the chance to go for it again!"

More than 30 of the best stock car racers in Eastern Canada and New England are expected to be on hand for The Daily News 150 - all vying for their share of the $32,000 purse.
