The top spot on the time sheets changed hands constantly throughout the session, but Mostert was a name that kept appearing in P1.
He made his presence known early with a 1:23.1794, later improving to a 1:21.9165 and becoming the first to drop down into the 21s. Mostert then proceeded to one-up himself with a 1:21.8469, but things got dramatic in the closing moments of the session.
Tim Slade surged to the top of the leaderboard with a 1:21.8457 before Jamie Whincup, who made slight contact with a barrier at one point, was able to displace him with a 1:21.8209.
The red flag was then displayed when Dale Wood stuffed his machine into the tire barriers. Mostert put up a new fast lap, but there were discussions on whether or not he made it across the line before the stoppage. In the end, he was cleared and his lap -- a 1:21.5486 -- would be enough to hold on to pole position.
Whincup, Slade, Michael Caruso, Rick Kelly, Nick Percat, Shane van Gisbergen, Mark Winterbottom, Todd Kelly and Lee Holdsworth rounded out the top ten.
