Busy Day for Team That Runs Races in Two Countries On Same Day

LEXINGTON, OHIO (AUGUST 7, 2004) -- G&W Motorsports took second-place honors in the GT class at the Emco Gears Mid-Ohio Road Racing Classic on Saturday. Spencer Pumpelly (Mason Neck, Va.) and Mark Greenberg (Boston, Mass.) shared driving duties in the no. 77 Porsche, sponsored by Netts and Louis Boston, during the 250-mile race.

The team's Rx.com No. 81 BMW Doran Daytona Prototype faced trouble early in the race when Brent Martini (Laguna Beach, Calif.) got tangled up with a Porsche and went into a gravel trap just before the carousel, bringing out a full-course caution on lap 11. The team was able to make repairs to the Daytona Prototype so that Cort Wagner (Los Angeles, Calif.) could also get behind the wheel. However, there was no way for the team to make up the large deficit it faced, and the Rx.com No. 81 BMW finished 11th in the Daytona Prototype class and 31st overall.

The Pipeservicestt.com and Autobysite.com-sponsored No. 86 Porsche of Mae Van Wilk (Kingwood, Texas) and Steve Marshall (Blacksburg, Va.) was not able to make it to the race because of damage it sustained in practice.

The EMCO Gears Mid-Ohio Road Racing Classic was not the only race G&W Motorsports competed in on Saturday. The team also fielded the Podium-sponsored No. 33 Pro Formula Mazda of Brad Coleman (Houston, Texas) in the Star Mazda Series race at the Toronto Grand Prix of Mosport in Bowmanville, Ontario. The 16-year-old rookie finished 23rd in the 45-minute sprint race.

The Star Mazda Series race from Mosport International Raceway will be broadcast on SPEED on August 29 at 2 p.m. ET.

G&W Motorsports will also compete in the Grand-Am Cup Series race at Mid-Ohio on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET. Joe Fox (Charlotte, N.C.), partnering with Chris Hall (Port Orange, Fla.) this weekend, will start the No. 81 Porsche on the third row after qualifying fifth for the Grand-Am Cup race.

G&W Motorsports, based outside of Danville, Va., at Virginia International Raceway, is the most successful team in the Rolex Sports Car Series, capturing the inaugural GT championship in 2000, both the GT and GTS championships in 2001 and the SRP II championship in 2003. G&W Motorsports is the only team to compete in every Rolex Series race since the series' inception, accumulating 15 class wins and 45 podium finishes in class.
