Fontana, Calif. (October 31, 1999) - Greg Moore, 26, of Maple Ridge, British Columbia, was fatally injured this afternoon in a single car accident at the California Speedway. Ten laps into the race Moore lost control of his car as it exited turn two. The car made hard contact with an inside retaining wall before launching into a series of flips on the apron grass.

Moore was airlifted to Loma Linda Medical Facility where efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.

"He died from massive head injuries and other associated internal injuries," said Dr. Steve Olvey, Medical Director for CART. "A large resuscitative effort was attempted at Loma Linda Hospital after he was airlifted there. Those attempts were unsuccessful because of the extent of the injuries."

"It is my very sad duty to extend condolences of Championship Auto Racing Teams, our drivers, our teams, and everybody in the CART family on what is a tragic and sad day for our series," Andrew Craig, President and CEO of CART.

"Greg was one of the new young tigers of Champ Car Racing, clearly and unequivocally a champion of tomorrow. He was everything that is good about this sport, talented, committed, courageous, fit. Everything that Champ Car racing stands for was embodied in Greg Moore"

Moore burst upon the CART scene in 1993 when he competed in the entire twelve race PPG-Dayton Indy Lights series. He captured eight top-ten finishes in his rookie season, finishing ninth in the championship. In 1994, Moore took the victory in the Indy Lights season opener at Phoenix becoming the youngest driver ever to win a CART sanctioned event.

Moore dominated the Indy Lights championship series in 1995 with ten victories in the 12 race series.

Moore's first win in a FedEx Championship Series event came at Milwaukee in 1997, earning the Canadian driver the distinction of becoming the youngest driver ever win a Champ Car race.

He recorded five FedEx Championship victories in the four years he spent in the series, the latest coming at the 1999 season opener at Homestead.
