Two cars confiscated at Bristol tech

Both the No. 14 Dodge of Larry Foyt and the No. 42 Dodge of Jamie McMurray have been confiscated by NASCAR. McMurray's team was able to revert to a back-up car, Foyt's team, however, was without a back-up and will head home.

McMurray's Dodge was taken this morning, after it failed an X-measurement specification in technical inspection. The X-measurement was 5/8 of an inch off on the rear window. The X-measurement runs from the corners of the rear decklid, across the rear window to the opposite corners of the roof. It is used to determine the placement of the car's decklid in relation to the centerline of the chassis.

The Ganassi team was unsure what had gone wrong. McMurray has only one word for it "Puzzling."

McMurray is the first car this year, but the third in two seasons. Tony Stewart's ride was taken by NASCAR at Texas in 2003, and Kyle Busch's car was seized at Homestead-Miami - both for the same infraction.

The Dodge of Foyt failed the roof rail template and was also taken by the sanction body for further evaluation. They too were befuddled by failure to meet NASCAR technical specifications.

"We just aren't sure where the ball was dropped on this deal," commented Foyt.

Tony Stewart was not penalized last season, but Kyle Busch was docked 25 owner points. Penalties are expected to be forthcoming for both McMurray and Foyt.
