Jeff Strunk Goes for Three Titles in 2000

Bechtelsville, PA March 1, 2000 . . . Jeff Strunk will not be running a Winston Cup car in 2000. That is just about the only rumor that has not been circulating about the talented modified stock car racer during the auto racing off season. Strunk, considered by many to be one of the top talents in local dirt track modified competition, will be gunning for three championships in 2000. The Bethel, PA racer will be going after the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Modified Championship at Grandview, the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Modified title at Big Diamond Raceway and he will be trying to repeat as champion of the Kenworth Cummins NASCAR Dual Track Modified Championship Series. And if he can do all that, Strunk just might be able to fatten his wallet by winning the NASCAR Regional title which would be worth close to $40,000 in point fund money. "Winning the title at Grandview and a NASCAR Regional title are about the only championships I have missed out on. I would really love to win those. And I think with all the preparation (new trailer and refurbished racers) that we have put into our team during the off season, we can do it," said Strunk. "This is the best prepared that the team has been in the three years I have been involved." Strunk has won titles at Susquehanna, Big Diamond and Penn National Speedways in the past. Though the 31-year-old driver has been rumored to be driving for just about everyone but Richard Childress (Dale Earnhardt's Winston Cup car owner), he will be back tooling the Kenworth Cummins W9 modifieds owned by Harring Motorsports. "We plan to race smarter not harder," said car owner Keith Harring. "We wanted to go to Florida for the DIRT sanctioned events but after a lot of discussion between Jeff and myself, we decided our time would be better spent getting prepared for the championship chases." The first outing of the season for the small block modified will be at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, PA on Sunday, March 19. "Jeff has always liked that track. That will probably be our first race of the season. And we will probably run the small block show at Hagerstown Speedway near the end of March. And then we will be spending our time getting ready for the Grandview Speedway opener (April 1)," said Harring. Strunk will have plenty of competition in his quest for the Grandview Speedway championship. At any given NASCAR modified event at the one-third-mile, banked clay oval there are 50 to 60 modified racers trying to make the feature. And most of those racers, if they make the feature, have a chance at winning the feature. The Bechtelsville oval offers some of the toughest competition in local modified racing. Tom Mayberry, the leading feature winner at Grandview Speedway in 1999, has already announced that he is shooting for the title. Kerry Kratz is a fan favorite along with such talents as Donny Erb, Ray Swinehart, Dennis Bailey, Jon Kellner, Ed Aikin, Kevin Hartnett, and a host of others. The 2000 season kicks off at Grandview Speedway on Saturday, March 25, 12 noon, with a free-to-the-public practice session. And officially the season gets the green flag on Saturday, April 1, 5 p.m. with a tripleheader show that includes Strunk and the NASCAR Modifieds, Exide Shortrack Late Models, and PA Sportsman stock cars. In fact all Saturday shows during April at Grandview will have a 5 p.m. starting time before switching to 7:30 p.m. starts in May.
