POMONA, CA It may not have been a win, but it sure was a good start to one of the most promising NHRA Pro Stock careers. In his first NHRA Pro Stock outing, New Orleans, Louisiana's Richie Stevens displayed the same prowess that earned him 1996 IHRA Rookie Of The Year accolades by finishing as a quarterfinalist at this afternoon's Winternationals at Pomona, California. After using a holeshot to eliminate Pro Stock veteran Steve Schmidt in the first round, he likewise strapped a holeshot on second round foe Jeg Coughlin, Jr. However, his valiant 7.015/197.49 run was not enough to fend off the charge of Coughlin's Oldsmobile that slipped by for a 6.971/198.10 win. Stevens, driver of the Collins Racing Pro Stock Pontiac Firebird, was nothing less than pleased with his debut. "To come out here to Pomona and do this well has us feeling real well," explained Stevens. "I think that gives us a very good baseline from which to start at. We can only hope that our next outing will be even better."
