TATUM, JONES ON TOP FOR WEST CENTRAL DIVISION OPENER

GREAT BEND, Kan. -- In the first rounds of qualifying for the NHRA West Central Division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series season opener at S.R.C.A. Dragstrip Top Alcohol Dragster driver Aaron Tatum and Top Alcohol Funny Car pilot Jimmy Jones took the No. 1 qualifying positions in their classes.

Tatum, of Oklahoma City, outran the field with a pass of 5.546 seconds at 260.97 mph. And Cleburne, Texas, resident Jones made a 5.868-second, 243.37 mph run to take the pole.

Todd Patterson of Augusta, Kan., leads the Comp Eliminator class running 7.965 seconds at 164.99 mph followed by Clint Neff of Westminster, Colo., in second.

A pair of Kansas residents lead the EPIC Top Dragster class with Christine Chambless of Scott City on top running 6.842 seconds at 194.91 mph and Phil Unruh of McPherson in the No. 2 spot at 6.871 seconds 198.76 mph. Unruh is pulling double duty this weekend, also running in the Super Stock class where he is qualified 16th behind No. 1 qualifier Rick Ryan of Aberdeen, S.D.

Other top qualifiers in today's opening rounds are James Kunkel of Benton, Kan., in Stock Eliminator followed by Charles Blossom and Steve Brack of Lawrence, Kan., in second and third. Jim White of Haysville, Kan., is on top in the division's Jerry Haas Race Cars Top Sportsman class with a run of 7.145 seconds at 193.24 mph and Zachary Schruppof Mound, Minn. is No. 1 in the Sportsman motorcycle series presented by Harley Davidson.

Racing continues Saturday at 9 a.m. Gates open at 7 a.m. Tickets are $15. Students with a valid ID are just $10 and children 12 and under are free. S.R.C.A. Dragstrip is located at 455 W. Barton County Rd; 2 ½ miles west of Great Bend on the old Air Force base. For more information, call the track, (785) 483-1980.
