Five Repeat Winners in Hardee's Summer Shootout Action

CONCORD, N.C. (July 6, 2004) - Three drivers enjoyed the spoils of victory for the first time while five others were repeat winners as Ricky Hendrick's Performance Honda-Suzuki-Aprilia presented round four of the 10-week Hardee's Summer Shootout Tuesday night at Lowe's Motor Speedway.

Michael Wirth proved his worth in the Tom Johnson Camping Center Legends Car Pro division feature, dominating the 20-lap run around the quarter-mile frontstretch oval. Wirth started outside the front row in the 23-car field and went wire-to-wire to record his first victory of the season. Jesse Smith of Wildwood, Mo., chased Wirth the entire distance and settled for runner-up money with seventh-starting Josh Waring the final podium finisher.

Andrew Rogers of Charlotte, N.C., extended his point lead in the Quaker Steak & Lube Thunder Roadsters, recording his second feature victory. Starting 10th in the 20-car field, Rogers methodically worked his way to the front and drove around Steve Zacharias for the lead on lap 14 of the 20-lap event. Zacharias hung on for second with John S. Freeman completing the top three.

Making the long tow from Virginia Beach, Va., C.E. Falk III notched his first victory in the 20-lap feature for the Raceape.com Legends Car Semi-Pro division. Falk started 10th, avoided a multi-car crash on the opening lap and beat Chrissy Wallace to the checkered flag. Wallace, the 16-year-old daughter of Daytona Busch Series winner Mike Wallace, led the early laps, but lost the point to Falk on lap five and had to settle for second. Former Bandolero star Scott Knox took third.

John Sossoman of New London, N.C., captured his second feature victory of the season in the Holiday Inn University Masters division for drivers ages 40 and over. Sossoman piloted his Legends Car to the front on lap 10 after a ninth-place start, and then traded the lead with Georgia's Brian Weimer before taking over for good with two laps remaining. Weimer finished second with Chuck Dohm claiming show honors in the 20-lap event.

In the 20-lap feature for the TopChoice for Fire Ants Bandolero Bandits, Zachary Stroupe of Iron Station, N.C., started ninth in the 24-car field, took the lead on lap eight and went on to record his third victory in four starts. Ryan Glenski led the early laps, but ended up second with Chad Akins third in the division for drivers ages 8 to 11.

Bret Hylton, son of NASCAR Busch Series crew chief Butch Hylton, posted his first feature victory in the 20-lap race for the Cabarrus Family Medicine Bandolero Young Guns. Hylton lined up third, took command on the opening lap and was never seriously challenged. He was followed under the checkered flag by Jake "The Snake" Crum, Nicholas Pope and Tyler Green.

Bruce Benson II scored a hat trick, winning his third consecutive feature in the Premise Termite Elimination Bandolero Outlaws. The Lexington, N.C., resident took command on lap four of the 20-lap race and held off Ryan Jernigan. Chris Morgan ended up third.

In the second summer showing for the Road Hawgs, Ken Deese of Monroe, N.C., made his second consecutive visit to victory lane and celebrated with a burnout down the frontstretch. Deese bumped his black No. 3 Buick to the front on lap three and pulled away to win in a fender-flying feature. Gene Loden and Rusty Drye followed Deese under the checkers in the 15-lap event for stock production automobiles.

The 10-week Hardee's Summer Shootout reaches its half-way point Tuesday night, July 13, with a wild and wacky School Bus race highlighting the program. Presented by Window Pros, the School Bus race will see the behemoth machines battle wheel-to-wheel in a 10-lap slobberknocker.

Gates open at 5 p.m. with feature racing starting at 7:30. Call 1-800-455-FANS for ticket information or visit www.lowesmotorspeedway.com.
