Wood whips Wallace in NASCAR celebrity grudge match as Thomas Van Wingerden repeats in Summer Shootout action

CONCORD, N.C. (June 17, 2003) - NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series driver Jon Wood beat NASCAR Winston Cup and Busch Series veteran Mike Wallace while Thomas Van Wingerden kept his record perfect during round two of the 10th annual Summer Shootout Series Tuesday night at Lowe's Motor Speedway.

Youth was served in the NASCAR Celebrity Grudge Match as 21-year-old Wood beat Wallace in a best two-out-of-three showdown in Winston Cup-style convertibles. Wood won the first three-lap race with Wallace topping the second. The two opted to run the final segment in the opposite direction, or clockwise. They ran side-by-side for most of the distance with Wood using a low move in the final turn to claim the victory.

Dyane Coffey of Charlotte, N.C., rode along with Wood in the winning mount while David Hicks of Harrisburg, N.C., was the passenger in Wallace's car. Two more lucky fans were selected from the crowd to ride shotgun in next week's event.

Starting from the pole in the 20-car field, Van Wingerden was never seriously challenged in his wire-to-wire drive in the 15-lap Legends Car Pro division main event. The Huntersville, N.C., driver's second straight victory firmly established him as the man to beat in the championship chase. Thirteen-year-old Jesse Smith and former Legends Car national champion Josh Waring waged a torrid battle for second with Smith eventually claiming the runner-up pay.

Fresh from an eighth-place showing in the American Speed Association stock car event Saturday night at I-70 Speedway in Odessa, Mo., Ryan Zeck of Harrisburg, N.C., dominated the 15-lap feature for the Thunder Roadsters. Starting second, Zeck took the lead on lap number three and was never challenged. Scott Whitaker claimed second with Andrew Rogers third.

Shortened to just 10 laps due to numerous caution flags for spins and minor tangles, the Legends Car Semi-Pro division feature saw Casey Dohm of Charlotte, N.C., record his first victory. Dohm lined up second in the 28-car field and beat Patrick Conrad to the stripe. Mike Wallace's daughter Chrissy was third under the checkered flag.

Phil "Razor" Sharpe of Charlotte, N.C., started second in the 28-car field and sliced to victory in the Legends Car Masters division feature. Wayne Whaley finished second with Dennis White third in the caution-filled event that was shortened to 12 laps due to time constraints. Larry Friddle was transported to NorthEast Medical Center for further evaluation following a two-car crash on the opening lap of the feature for Legends Car drivers age 40 and over. The Greenville, S.C., driver was complaining of back pain.

Corey Lajoie, son of two-time NASCAR Busch Series champion Randy Lajoie, dominated the 15-lap Bandolero Bandits feature, recording his first career victory. The Kannapolis, N.C., resident took the lead from the outside of the front row and was never challenged in the division for drivers ages 8 to 11. Matt Martin, son of NASCAR Winston Cup veteran Mark Martin, closed on Lajoie during the final laps but settled for second. Jordan Paschal was next under the checkered flag.

Ryan Bowman of Lilburn, Ga., emerged from a torrid three-car battle to win the 15-lap Bandolero Young Guns feature for the second consecutive week. Bruce Benson II started from the pole in the 22-car field and led the first 12 laps before Bowman slipped past. Once in front, Bowman held off Benson and Drew Calhoun in the division for drivers ages 12 to 16.

Veteran Allen Stowe of Concord, N.C., charged through the field from the fifth-starting position to record his first Summer Shootout victory the 15-lap feature for the Bandolero Outlaws. Jason Haynes ran second in the event for drivers age 17 and over while Christopher Morgan crossed under the checkered flag in the show position.

The Carolina Showstoppers motorcycle stunt team also entertained the fans with a two-wheeled version of the "Fast and Furious." The four riders performed a variety of radical stunts and tire-smoking burnouts on motorcycles and four-wheelers.

The 10th annual Summer Shootout continues Tuesday night, June 24. In addition to the regular racing divisions, wild-and-wacky School Bus racing returns and FOX NASCAR commentators Jeff Hammond and Larry McReynolds will trade paint in the Celebrity Grudge Match. Gates open at 5 p.m. with feature racing at 7:30.
