Rockford added to Late Model schedule

PENDLETON, Ind. (February 26, 2004) -- The American Speed Association has announced the 2004 ASA Late Model Series season finale will take place at the legendary 39th Annual National Short Track Championships at Rockford (Ill.) Speedway on September 26.

"We are thrilled to have the opportunity for the ASA Late Model Series to compete at Rockford in one of the longest running traditions in short track racing," said Joe Balash, ASA vice-president, race operations. "The Rockford track is a classic quarter-mile bullring that guarantees fender-banging action."

Rockford Speedway is located in Rockford, the second largest city in Illinois. The speedway will celebrate their 57th year of operation in 2004, making it Northern Illinois' oldest professional and continuous sports venue.

"The energy generated by the large number of competitors from around the Midwest with the ASA Late Model Series is tremendous," said Jody Deery, Rockford Speedway promoter. "This years Short Track Championships will certainly be one to remember!"

Since the inaugural season in 1948, the high-banked quarter mile oval has been tabbed as Mid-America's Finest Racetrack. Rich in racing tradition, this reputation has been well earned through hosting major events like the granddaddy of all short track post- season events, the National Short Track Championships.

This prestigious fall event have helped launch the careers of NASCAR stars Mark Martin, Dick Trickle, Alan Kulwicki, Ted Musgrave, Rusty Wallace, Greg Biffle and Matt Kenseth.

The entire 2004 ASA Late Model Series schedule continues to be formulated with a total of 14 events expected to make up the final slate.

Officials are planning for 100-lap green flag races with a preference to not have competitors changing tires, adding fuel or needing pit stops during the events. The cars will include makes from three major manufacturers - General Motors, Ford and Dodge. They will utilize template bodies and engines from all three.

The American Speed Association is based in Pendleton, Ind., and has offered stock car racing programs since 1968, including the ASA National Tour, ASA Late Model Series and ASA Member Track programs. For additional information, visit asaracing.com.
