SASCAR hits Gauteng - and each other
by Barry de Klerk

SASCAR went north to South Africa's economic centre this weekend with races at both the Wembley short oval and the Kyalami Grand Prix circuit on the schedule.

Wembley in Johannesburg was scheduled to be SASCAR's first race meeting at a banked oval, the oval at Killarney having been flat. Again the racing was a series of heats, this time it was 2 car duels. However, after the first few of these match races, won respectively by Johan Fourie, Ben Morgenrood, Grant van Schalkwyk, George Fouche, Peter Lindenberg and Kosie Swanepoel, rain brought proceedings to a halt, to the disappointment of the big crowd.

Saturday 25 November saw SASCAR on a programme which included international sports prototype racing, Lamborghini racing, various national racing categories and an international supersport motorcycles contest between South Africa, Australia and Great Britain.

Race 1
Johan Fourie started the Saturday race on pole, winning an incident packed race from George Fouche and newcomer Deon Joubert. While life for Fourie was relatively untroubled there was mayhem behind him, including 3 spins and a crash which eliminated JJ Maree. And this was just lap 1!

Ben Morgenrood battled to second place, but was demoted by Fouchem, who had earlier passed Joubert. Morgenrood, suffering brake problems, was then involved in a crash with Kosie Swanepoel and Grant Van Schalkwyk. On lap 10 Rob Beaumont spun out for the 3rd time and was T-boned by Lindenberg, who had had a spin of his own much earlier in the race. <pre> SASCAR HI-Q ROUND 4 RACE 1 RESULTS: (12 laps) 1 Johan Fourie (#4 MD Transport) lives in Cape Town 2 George Fouche (#10 Bosal - Chev) East London - Gonubie 3 Deon Joubert (#17 Brospeed - Chev) Cape Town - Table View 4 Kosie Swanepoel (#3 Tsingtao Beer - Chev) CT 5 Grant van Schalkwyk (# 42 Hi-Q - Chev) JHB - Wendywood 6 Peter Lindenberg (2 Kwik-Fit/Bosal - Ford) JHB - Bryanston 7 Ben Morgenrood (#7 Hillbank/Ford) JHB - Randfontein 8 Neville Rossouw (#9 Barnetts Auto Spares - Chev) CT 9 *Claude Williams (#5 Barnetts Auto Spares - Ford) CT 10 Justin Price (#24 PPG Paints - Ford) Port Elizabeth

Johan Fourie again dominated the second race, which saw the same top three as the previous race. Behind them Peter Lindenberg fought his way up to 4th place, while Ben Morgenrood, who had dominated the early races, managed to hold off the persistent Kosie Swanepoel for 5th place.

JJ Maree, who had just signed a sponsorship deal for the 2001 season rewarded his hardworking crew who had twice repaired his car after crashes at Wembley and race 1 by finishing 8th behind Neville Rossouw.
