Thirteen winners in Toledo battles

Pendleton, IN (April 24, 2003) -- Making its return to the Midwest, the ASA Racing Series roars into Toledo Speedway on Sunday, May 18. The ASA Racing Glass City 300 marks the 17th visit to the Ohio track for the series known to build champions and the first of two races in the Buckeye State during the 36th season of championship stock car racing.

ASA has raced at the .50-mile Toledo Speedway on 16 different occasions with 13 competitors scoring victories in these events. ASA's 1989 Rookie of the Year Scott Hansen has captured three victories with seven-time ASA national champion Mike Eddy winning two events at the Ohio track. Single-event winners include Johnny Benson Jr., Joey Clanton, Rick Knotts, Brad Loney, Butch Miller, Bryan Reffner, Joe Ruttman, Johnny Sauter, Tim Sauter, Bob Senneker and Rusty Wallace.

Hansen has experienced a significant amount of success at Toledo, posting three victories and three poles. He is also the current holder of the single-lap qualifying record. The Green Bay, Wis. racer made a successful debut in 1991, winning the Toledo 400. Hansen made the race-winning pass of Eddy with 16 laps remaining. At the checkers, Eddy and Benson followed the race winner across the finish line.

Advancing from his ninth starting position, Hansen won his 12th ASA event in October of 1994. After powering around 1996 series champion Tony Raines, Hansen's No. 53 car finished .22 seconds ahead of Glenn Allen Jr. of Cincinnati.

Hansen's third victory came in May of 1996 in the Glass City 300. He bypassed Eddy on lap 283 and then held off a late-race charge from Joe Nott. ASA's 1994 Rookie of the Year, Dave Sensiba, finished in third.

Michigan's Eddy has two victories at Toledo, winning ASA's second appearance in 1981 and the May event in 1995. In his 1981 triumph, Eddy took the lead for the last time with 41 circuits remaining, passing four-time ASA titlist Mark Martin. Following Eddy across the line were Alan Kulwicki and rookie Chuck Roumell.

In the 1995 event, Eddy took the top spot from 1995 champ Bryan Reffner on the 203rd lap of the 300-lap event. At the finish, Eddy was .53 seconds ahead of runner-up Mike Miller.

In ASA's most recent event at Toledo, eventual 2002 series champ Joey Clanton dominated the Metro Toledo/Northwest Ohio Ford Dealers 300 Presented by Jani-King and Sterling on Sunday, Aug. 11 to score his eighth victory of 2002.

Clanton drove to the inside of 1997 series champ Kevin Cywinski coming off the fourth corner on lap 78 and then led the remainder of the 300-lap event. With this victory, Clanton retook the season point lead from two-time ASA champ Gary St. Amant, who failed to lead a lap and was never a factor while finishing 12th. It was Clanton's 12th career win and his first since I-70 Speedway in June.

ASA returns to Toledo for the ASA Racing Glass City 300 on Saturday, May 17 and Sunday, May 18. Practice gets underway on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. with pole qualifying scheduled for 4:30. On Sunday, activities get started with ASA's exclusive on-track autograph session at 1 p.m. with pre-race ceremonies beginning at 2 and the ASA Racing Glass City 300 going green at 3 p.m. (Eastern)
