It's a new track record June 6, 1999

We had a busy weekend with races Friday in Lima, Ohio, Saturday, 16th St. Speedway, and Sunday, Winchester.

Friday night we headed up to Lima Land Speedway to a Namars Series midget race. We had never ran at this newly renovated quarter mile track, but everything went well up there. I not only won my 8-lap heat race, but I set a new track record for the fastest 8 lap average speed! I started 10th in the feature race. I tried to run low but there seemed to be too much traffic there. So, I tried running in the middle and got passed by a couple of cars. Having moved up slowly to 8th, I decided to run up high on the track close to the wall. The banking on this track made it pretty exciting up there, but that was where I had my best chance of getting ahead. After finally figuring that out, I think if the race was a few laps longer, I could have finished better, but we ran a good race and finished a respectable 5th.

HEAT WINNER AT 16TH STREET SPEEDWAY Saturday night, I won my heat race, and advanced to the feature. The track was pretty slick so I knew the race would be tough. I was running well when I got a flat tire and was unable to finish. That was certainly unexpected and disappointing. We packed it up and got some rest before having to face Sunday's race.

The Winchester track is a high-banked asphalt track, billed as the fastest half-mile oval. The banks can be treacherous. This was the second race in our new MCI WorldCom pavement car. We had a few mechanical problems in the morning, which caused us to miss most of the practice sessions. Our qualifying speed put us in the front row of the third heat race. Not having a good feel for what the car can really do yet, I ran a conservative race. We finished 7th and didn't make the feature race. I feel confident with a little more practice in this car, we are really going to do well in the future.

So all in all, we had a good, but tiring weekend. The team and I will be testing up at Anderson this Wednesday to get ready for the June 16th race.
