Lasoski Wins Joplin Prelim, Ties Haudenschild By Richard Day JOPLIN, MO (March 24) -- Danny Lasoski took another step toward "bringing the first championship of the new millennium back to Missouri" Friday when the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series opened its inaugural event at Joplin 66 Speedway. Lasoski, from Dover, MO, led all 25 laps in the caution-free race while holding off Daryn Pittman and Steve Kinser to win his first Preliminary Feature of the season. The $5,000 victory pushed "The Dude" into a tie with Jac Haudenschild for first place in the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series point standings. "I have to thank Tim Shaffer for this one," Lasoski said. "I lapped him and he drove right back by me, and that showed me the faster line higher on the race track. We were working pretty good on the bottom, but I got lucky and found the faster line before Steve (Kinser) used it to drive by me. "This Wesmar engine and Eagle chassis allow us to run the bottom and get off the corner pretty good, so we usually set up to run where most guys don't, and that's on the bottom. Anyone can get their car hooked up on the cushion." Lasoski was "hooked up" in the First CHANNELLOCK Dash, winning the 10-lap race from inside the third row for the right to start the Preliminary Feature on the pole. Kinser won the Second NAPA AUTO PARTS Heat Race and the Second CHANNELLOCK Dash, then started the feature on the front row next to "The Dude." Lasoski drove the #83 Beef Packers Eagle into the lead as the green flag fell in the Preliminary Feature. Sammy Swindell took over third place with a high move around Pittman in the second corner. Greg Hodnett, who started inside the fifth row, steered the #V12 Wirtgen Maxim deep into turn four to pass defending Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series champion Mark Kinser for sixth place late in lap three. "The Dude," who was five car-lengths ahead of Steve Kinser when he entered lapped traffic during the seventh lap, increased his advantage to 10 car-lengths in dense traffic during the race's middle stages. "The King of the Outlaws" closed to within five car-lengths by the 14th lap, then steered his #11 Quaker State Maxim into the high groove between the first and second corners to catch Lasoski two laps later. Pittman, who won the First NAPA AUTO PARTS Heat Race, kept pace with the leaders, and took the runner-up spot with an inside move in turn two with almost 4 1/2 laps remaining. Swindell used a similar move in his #1 CHANNELLOCK Stealth to pass Kinser for third place the next time around. Andy Hillenburg took the low line through the third and fourth corners to pass Stevie Smith for fifth place late in the 23rd lap. Mark Kinser steered the #5M Mopar Maxim into the low groove between turns one and two to pass Smith within seconds after the white flag fell, then won a back-straightaway drag race with Hodnett to claim to sixth place. Pittman was five car-lengths behind when Lasoski took the checkered flag. Swindell finished third, ahead of Steve Kinser, Hillenburg, Mark Kinser, Hodnett, Smith, 14th-starting Danny Wood, Lance Blevins. The #22 Elden Racing Maxim suffered a blown engine during its second qualifying lap, causing Haudenschild to qualify a disappointing 21st in the 48-car field. He finished seventh in the First NAPA AUTO PARTS Heat Race, then qualified for the Preliminary Feature by winning the "B" Feature. "The Wild Child" passed five cars to finish 14th in the evening's main event. Johnny Herrera earned his first Vivarin Fast-Time Award of the year by pacing the qualifying session with a 13.979-second lap around the high-banked, 3/8-mile oval. The Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series' amended racing format took effect at Joplin 66 Speedway. By allowing the cars finishing 7-10 in the CHANNELLOCK Dashes and 1-4 in the "B" Feature to retain their qualifying times, it moved Herrera from inside the 10th row to inside the seventh row in the feature lineup. He drove the #20 Networks Eagle into 16th place. The new format moved 27th-quick Kelly Kinser from the 15th starting position to 23rd and the last driver to qualify for the feature - Jeff Shepard - from outside the 12th row to outside the eighth row. Kinser and Shepard finished 22nd and 21st, respectively. Scott Whitworth drove Two Winners Racing's #7TW J&J in place of recuperating Dennis Moore, Jr. He was the 43rd-fastest qualifier, finished 11th in the Third NAPA AUTO PARTS Heat Race and fourth in the "C" Feature.
