Colton Herta moves up to Euroformula Open

Colton Herta, son of IndyCar race winner Bryan, will get his first taste of Formula 3 racing in 2016, entering Euroformula Open with Carlin.

Herta, 15, raced for Carlin in the British MSA Formula series last year, finishing third overall.

He had originally signed on to do BRDC F4 in 2016, but it has since come up that the American would have been forced to miss the season opener at Snetterton, with the first race kicking off three days before he hits the minimum eligible age of 16.

As such, Carlin has instead put Herta in its new squad in the Euroformula Open series.

“Colton had made a great start in his BRDC testing programme and adapted to the increased power very quickly,” said Trevor Carlin.

“When given the opportunity in the F3 car he was extremely impressive and, given the fact that he would have been forced to miss the first race on the BRDC calendar, it made sense to move to EuroFormula Open.

"He’s got a lot of potential for such a young driver and we can’t wait to see what he can achieve this season.”

In the eight-round series, which is run on Dallara F312s across seven different European countries, Herta will be partnered by fellow MSA Formula graduate Ameya Vaidyanathan and a likely third entrant.

“I’m really happy to be moving to EuroFormula Open,” Herta said.

“The F3 car is awesome to drive and although there will be a lot of new circuits for me to learn this year, racing on F1 tracks and historic circuits such as Spa will be fantastic. I’m very thankful to my sponsors for the opportunity and can’t wait to get started.”
