Hungary GP3: Aitken takes dominant win as Russell breaks down

Jack Aitken took his first GP3 win of the season in the main race at the Hungaroring, as championship leader George Russell broke down on the formation lap.

Aitken converted his pole position into a lights-to-flag victory, as the only real threat to his win was a first-lap charge from ART teammate Nirei Fukuzumi.

The safety car neutralised the action after the opening lap due to Arjun Maini and Tatiana Calderon both stopping on-track.

Following the restart and a short virtual safety car stint when Steijn Schothorst's car came to a halt, Aitken set several fastest laps during the race to eventually win by 4.4s.

Fukuzumi took second as Anthoine Hubert completed an all-ART podium after making a brilliant move on Dorian Boccolacci on the outside of Turn 2.

Soon after losing third, Boccolacci was also under attack from Niko Kari, only for the Finn to run off-track at Turn 1 during his overtaking attempt and slip behind the Frenchman's Trident teammates Giuliano Alesi and Kevin Jorg.

Afterwards, Alessio Lorandi fought past all three and then chased down Boccolacci. While his first move at Turn 1 didn't come off as he ran wide, Lorandi finally outmanoeuvred Boccolacci at Turn 2 with three laps to go.

The Frenchman had to settle for fifth, followed by Alesi, Jorg.

Kari only took ninth after also falling behind Ryan Tveter, as Bruno Baptista took the final two points-scoring position.

With his win, Aitken has climbed up to second in the standings, 11 points behind Russell.
