Grandview Speedway results 2003-09-20

BECHTELSVILLE, PA September 21, 2003 . . . For the 50th time in his career Rick Schaffer was able to win a NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Modified race at Grandview Speedway on Saturday night and Chris Shuey closed out the regular schedule of events for the season winning his fifth Late Model feature race.

Two time Modified champion Jeff Strunk became a three time NASCAR Modified Champion when he finished 16th in the 30 lap feature while Meme DeSantis was eliminated from competition in a first lap 16 car accident and had to settle for 23rd.

Unofficially Strunk, who calls Bethel home, finished 47 points ahead of DeSantis to gain the crown. However with the problems both drivers had during the night the New England Regional worth $45,000 seems to have slipped from their grasps. Final figures from NASCAR will not be available until early in the week.

Randy Stoudt, without a feature win to his credit, was able to use consistent finishes to gain the NASCAR Late Model title by 240 points (unofficially) over two time champion Lou Egrie. It was the first championship for the Pottstown racer. Egrie had to borrow a car from Ron Chrisman to run the feature but his 12th place finishing effort was not enough to earn him his third championship.

It seemed like a night of destruction as just nine cars finished in the 30-lap Rossi Welding/Arctic Cat Night NASACR Modified feature. Rick Schaffer (Woxall), the all time leading modified feature winner, grabbed the lead at the start and never relinguished the top spot getting his second victory of the season. For much of the main event Terry Meitzler put pressure on Schaffer but the former champion just could not mount enough of an effort to get by the leader. Meitzler (Kutztown) settled for second. Keith Brightbill (Mohnton) had one of his best efforts of the season finishing third and had run as high as second. Jon Kellner (Lansdale) grabbed fourth and Kenny Gilmore (Fleetwood) held on to finish fifth. A number of cautions and red flags dotted the program.

In the 20-lap main event for NASCAR Late Models Dean Schaeffer got the lead at the drop of the green with Harry Neiman moving to the front at the second lap marker. With just a third of the laps complete Chris Shuey moved to the front of the pack and held the top spot for the balance of the race. It was the fifth of the season for the Orefield, PA racer. Second spot was earned by Harry Neiman (Pottstown) while veteran Rick Todorow (Quakertown) came home third. Brian Shuey, younger brother of the winner who calls Edenburg home, finished in fourth while Randy Stoudt (Pottstown) came home in fifth spot.

In the late model qualifying events wins went to Harry Neiman, Randy Stoudt and Dean Schaeffer. The consolation race had Kelly Snyder as the winner.

In modified qualifiers wins went to Doug Manmiller, Meme DeSantis, Jeff Strunk and Kenny Gilmore. The two consolation races were won by Kyle Weiss and Danny Erb. Doug Manmiller got $370 for winning the Cash Dash. The open competition racing events that had been planned for September 27th have been cancelled.

The next event scheduled at Grandview takes place on Saturday, October 18th, 6 p.m. the NAPA Auto Parts Thunder on the Hill Series, promoted by Bob Miller and Bruce Rogers, will feature five 25-lap main events (no qualifying races) for NASCAR Modifieds, Late Models, 410 Sprints, URC Sprints and Legends Cars.

The annual Grandview Speedway Racer's Flea Market is set for Saturday, November 1, 7 a.m.
