ENNIS, TEXAS (Oct. 19) Larry Dixon drove Don Prudhomme's Miller Lite Dragster to a pass of 4.644 seconds at 310.88 mph to earn the No. 6 position after the first day of qualifying Friday at the 16th Annual O'Reilly Fall Nationals at Texas Motorplex.
Dixon, who is currently only 58 points out of the Top Fuel points lead, started off the NHRA's annual visit to "the Big D," with a shortened pass of 9.404 seconds at 86.17 mph down the left lane as he clicked off early due to tire shake. The abbreviated run placed Dixon in the No. 16 spot after the opening session.
The Friday night session, which generally produces the quickest qualifying numbers of the weekend, saw Dixon sail down the right lane to a time of 4.644 seconds at 310.88 mph. His evening lap helped him pick up 10 positions on the qualifying ladder as Dixon now sits No. 6 among the 19-car Top Fuel field going into Saturday's final two qualifying sessions.
Since he first climbed behind the wheel for Prudhomme in 1995, Dixon's best finish at Texas Motorplex has been a pair of runner-up finishes coming in 1997 and again in 2000. Two more qualifying sessions remain on Saturday (1:00 and 4:15 PM), while Sunday's elimination rounds are scheduled to begin at 10:30 AM.
