BITD: Tonopah "300" preview

The 2001 ~ Tonopah "300" races over Silver Peak and Montezuma Mountain Range ~ Truly An Off-Road Adventure!

Las Vegas, NV - The Best In The Desert Racing Association's 2001 - "Silver State Series" off-road race, the Tonopah "300", is set for June 22, 23, 24, 2001, in the historic mining town of Tonopah, Nevada. Billed as "An Epic Nevada Off-Road Race" the racecourse travels through some of the most historic land in Nevada. The racers will travel through the old mining towns of Silver Peak and Goldfield and through the old ghost town of Montezuma. From the fun, challenging, three-hundred mile racecourse, and the absolutely gorgeous new 100-miles of course through Fishlake Valley, in the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, an adventure is in store for everyone!

Casey Folks, Director of Best In The Desert Racing Association, has laid out an incredible course this year. Casey Folks says, "This is one of the best courses I have ever laid out. The racecourse travels through some unbelievably colorful parts of Nevada. The new section over the Silver Peak Range, is without question, the most scenic and most thrilling section in this part of the country! I think the racers and support crews are going to love it!"

Defending champion in the 1500 Unlimited Car Class is Sam Berri, but he's got some tough competition this year with Mark Weyhrich, Troutdale, OR, Casey Jones, Ely, NV, and Kory Scheeler, Las Vegas, NV, right on his bumper! Defending Champion in the 1400 Trick Truck Class is Gary Vosburg, Las Vegas, NV, always a tough competitor! Damon Jefferies, Temuecula, CA, raced successfully in the 1500 Class last year, and is just a littler bigger this year in his new Ford Trick Truck, make sure to see the unbelievable paint job as it passes through contingency! To date, six (6) Pro Trucks are entered, always a fun race to keep tabs on! The 8000 Class is always right in front, keep your eye on Kyle Taylor, San Jacinto, CA, Dave Westham, Las Vegas, NV, and Keith Fontana, San Rafael, CA, they are consistently fighting for 1, 2, & 3!

Defending Champion in the Professional Motorcycle Division is Johnny Campbell and Tim Staab, riding for Honda. This team is always consistent, fast and just plain fun to watch ride! An unbelievably close race last year, the team of Destry Abbott and Brian Brown, riding for Kawasaki, came in 8 seconds behind the leader. You can bet this is going to be a tough race!

The Quad Division in Best In The Desert is growing by leaps and bounds! Keep your eye on Doug Eichner and John Gregory, William Yokley and Michael Cafro, and Steve Beilman and Greg Stuart. Also, watch the team of Eric Hays and Joshua Frederick, they are right up there with the lead! These Quad men are the tough of the tough!

Registration begins at 10:00 am, at the Station House Hotel Pullman Room and Contingency and Technical Inspection begin at 11:00 am, at the Tonopah High School, all on Friday, June 22, 2001. The Motorcycles and Quads start at 5:45 am, and the Cars and Trucks start at 8:30 am, on Saturday, June 23, 2001, at the Joe Friel Sports Complex. Spectators are welcome!
