IPSC: Lady Luck rides with Dave Gorveatt at Scotia Speedworld

{TX} (June 17) - Dave Gorveatt is the first to admit he was blessed by circumstances with his trip to Victory Lane in the Forbes Chev Olds 150 at Scotia Speedworld. It was a wreck that collected several of the top runners with just 16 laps remaining in the 150-lap feature that set the stage for the final outcome. A crowd of 4,200 watched the show under warm, sunny skies.

"We had a top 10 car," said Gorveatt, from Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, driver of the No. 33 Monte Carlo. "We were just biding our time and staying out of trouble when the schmozzle happened up front. Then me and my horseshoe hung on for the win."

That "horseshoe" earned Gorveatt a check for $5,000 (U.S.) for the win. In addition, he will receive a $125 bonus for the Snap-on Tools Teamwork Award after advancing the most spots in the feature from his 22nd-place starting spot.

Kirk Thibeau, Fort Fairfield, Maine was second in his No. 28 Ford followed by Sam Sessions of South Paris, Maine in the No. 0 Auburn Metal Monte Carlo. Both Thibeau and Sessions scored the highest finishes in their respective IPSC careers. Gorveatt was the winner of the inaugural IPSC race in 1998, also at Scotia Speedworld.

Maine's Tom Mayberry and Nova Scotia's Mike Riley rounded out the top five.

Motor Mart Heat Race wins were scored by Gary Smith, Bangor, Maine and Thibeau. Checkers, a check for $300 and the pole position for the feature race were collected by Ralph Nason, Unity, Maine in the Motor Mart Dash For Cash.

The Snap-on Tools Time Trials saw Ben Rowe set a new track record of 13.752 seconds at the 3/10-mile facility. Rowe, from Turner, Maine eclipsed his own previous record of 13.918. Rowe drew the 10th starting spot in the Motor Mart Dash For Cash, finishing sixth, which is where he started the feature. He finished eighth after being involed in the incident on lap 134 while racing for the lead.

Pole sitter Nason accepted the Copenhagen Inc./Ultramar Corner Stores Pole Challenge which moved him from the front of the field to the rear for the feature - for an opportunity to win a $3,000 (Cdn.) bonus if he came through the field and won the race. He advanced five spots earning $500 ($100 bonus per spot gained) before retiring to the pits with overheating problems.

Nason's taking the rear advanced Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia's Scott Fraser to the head of the field for the start of the race. Fraser held on the the point until being overtaken by Larry Gelinas on lap 77. The two raced nose to tail and side by side for laps on end, putting on a spectacular show for the fans. Gelinas, Scarborough, Maine, maintained the lead until lap 98 when the fuel filler line on his racer came loose. A stop on pit road for the Gelinas crew to remove the line moved Fraser back to the front. Gelinas finished 15th. Fraser led until he and Rowe got together on lap 134, when Gorveatt took over.

There were seven cautions in the race which took 54 minutes, 25 seconds to complete.

The International Pro Stock Challenge (IPSC) moves to Unity Raceway in Unity, Maine on June 24th for race number five of the 11-race series. <pre> UNOFFICIAL FORBES CHEV OLDS 150 RESULTS: 1.
