Potomac Speedway Results 2000-06-09

Budds Creek, Md., -- Two special events, along with the regular show, made-up the line- up of racing action at Potomac Speedway this past Friday night. The first of the events was the 40-lap, $2,000-to-win Budweiser Late Model I.T.S.I. feature. This was a make- up from the rainout on April 21st. The second event was the scheduled 25-lap Coors Light Pure-Street Stock Mike Wathen Memorial. When the checkered flags waved, the winners of these events were found to be no strangers to victory lane at the track. Les Hare of New Park, PA, was the late model winner. Hare dominated the evening, winning his heat race then leading all 40-laps of the race feature. It was his second win of the season. Johnny Smith of Severn, Md., was the pure-street victor, getting his third win of the season. Smith worked his way back up through the field after being caught up in an early race incident to take the checkered flag. In the Bell Motor Company Semi-Lates, Darryl Hills of Lexington Park, Md., picked up his third win of the season. Greg Gunter of Berryville, Va., won his second feature of the season in the Mac Tools Four-Cylinders. Wayne Weaver of Pasadena, Md., visited victory lane for the first time in the Gardiner Outdoor Products Enduros. Coors Light Pure-Street Stock driver, Stevie Long, donated the child's bike for the bike giveaway. Seven-year-old Heather Adkins of Waldorf, Md., daughter of Budweiser Late Model driver, James Adkins, Jr., was the lucky bike winner. Front row starters Jim Bernheisel and Les Hare battled side-by-side for the lead as the green flag waved in the 40-lap Budweiser Late Model I.T.S.I. feature. Hare won the battle for the top spot just before they crossed the start-finish line to complete lap one. Just as lap one was put in the books, the first of only three cautions came out for Tommy Wagner, Jr., and Pat Wood in turn two. On the restart, Hare led the way. Caution number two came out on lap 12 for an incident involving David Hoffman and Tom Rawlings on the backstretch. When the field went back to green, Hare easily showed the way. Hare began pulling away from the rest of the field. By lap 15, he had put about a half straight-a-way distance between himself and second-place runner Bernheisel. His advantage was cut down on lap 19 when a caution came out for Wagner who spun in turn two. When the field went back to green flag racing, Hare jumped out front. He again began pulling away from the rest of the field. Hare went on to take the checkered flag, leading all 40 laps. He finished with about a four-to-five car length advantage over Bernheisel. Deane Guy finished third, followed by Allen Brannon in fourth, and Roy Deese, Jr., rounding out the top five. Hare, Bernheisel, and Harold Dorsey, Jr., won the heats. Ronnie Hollidge led the way in the 20-lap Bell Motor Company Semi-Late feature as the green flag waved. Before the first lap was completed, Junior Lathroum spun in turns one and two. The field had a complete restart. Again, Hollidge showed the way when the green flag waved. Paul Barham and Sommey Lacey both began to challenge for the lead. As they entered turns three and four, Barham spun, collecting Lacey, Paul Cursey, Jeff Reeley, Ray Hackett, and Lathroum. The field once again had a complete restart. Hollidge led the way as the field took the green . He was able to get one lap in the books when a caution came out for Brett Royal. On the restart, Hollidge jumped out front. On lap three, Darryl Hills, who started 10th and worked his way up to second, made a bid for the lead. He went to the inside of Hollidge in turns one and two, making the pass for the lead on the backstretch. Three more laps were completed when a caution came out for Bill Daniel who spun on the frontstretch. Hills showed the way on the restart. By lap 11, Hills had almost a straight-a-way advantage. He went on to take the checkered flag, unchallenged for the top spot. Hollidge finished second, followed by Junior Lathroum in third, Jeff Reeley in fourth, and Steve Benjamin in fifth. Lathroum won the heat. Tommy Hitt and Deano Painter battled side-by-side for the lead at the drop of the green flag in the 15-lap Coors Light Pure-Street Stock feature. Painter won the battle as they exited turn two to lead the way. Before the lap was completed, a caution came out for Mike Roop who spun in turn four. On the restart, Hitt led the way. Painter challenged for the lead in turn and was able to make the pass. Painter put two laps in the books when the second caution came out for an incident in turn two involving Rusty Alton, Mike Latham and Johnny Smith. On the restart, Painter led the way. Bobby Tipton, Jr. and Hitt battled for second. Tipton was able to take the position. On lap four, Tipton spun as they exited turn two, collecting Jamie Lathroum. Tipton never came to a four-wheel stop, so he got his position back. Painter again led the way on the restart as Hitt and Tipton continued to battle for second. Tipton held onto the position. Tipton then set his sights on the lead. He made his move on the inside groove of turn two. The two ran side-by-side down the backstretch and into turns three and four. There was a lapped car on the bottom of the track in the turns. Tipton went around the lapped car, pushing up into Painter. Painter fell back several positions as Tipton took over the lead. Tipton continued to show the way as Painter and Hitt battled for second. On lap 21, Painter went to the inside of Hitt in turns one and two. At the same time, Tipton got loose and spun. Both Hitt and Painter tried to go around Tipton, but Tipton's car nipped Painter's causing Painter to spin, bringing out a caution. Hitt then assumed the lead. On the restart, Hitt led the way. As they entered turn two, Johnny Smith made his move on the inside of Hitt. The two ran side-by-side down the backstretch. Smith was able to make the pass for the lead in turns three and four. Once Smith took over, he never looked back. He went on to take the checkered flag, finishing with about a four-to-five car length lead over Hitt. Ken Coron finished third, followed by P.J. Hatcher in fourth, and Kirk Confair in fifth. Painter, Hitt, and Tipton won the heats. Sam Woods and Chappy Knaack battled for the lead as the green flag waved in the 12-lap Mac Tools Four-Cylinders feature. Knaack got the position in turns one and two to lead lap one. On lap three, Knaack brushed the wall as he exited turn two. Then second-place runner, Greg Gunter, dove to the inside of Knaack to take over the lead. Deuce Wright also passed Knaack. Gunter began to pull away from the rest of the field. By lap eight, he had almost a straight-a-way advantage over Wright. His advantage was cut down on lap nine when Deuce Wright got loose off turn two. Wayne Graves had no where to go and clipped Wright, causing him to spin and bringing out a caution. On the restart, Gunter easily led the way. He went on to lead the rest of the feature, unchallenged for the lead. The best battle on the track was between Graves and Knaack. On lap 11, Knaack passed Graves to take over second. As they entered turn two on lap 12, Knaack got loose. Graves dove to the inside of him, retaking second. Knaack finished third, followed by Sam Woods, Jr., in fourth, and Calvin Wright in fifth. Gunter and Deuce Wright won the heats. In the 20-lap Gardiner Outdoor Products Enduro feature, Rodney Holt and Wayne Weaver made up the front starting row. As the green flag waved, Holt and Weaver battled for the top position. Just as Weaver grabbed the lead, the yellow flag waved for an incident involving Ben Bowie and the H&D Racing entry. The field then had a complete restart. Wayne Weaver and Rodney Holt again battled for the lead. As they exited turn four, Weaver found his way out front to lead lap one. By lap two, John Ballou took second from Holt. On lap six, Ballou looked to the inside of Weaver in turn four, but couldn't make a move. Ballou tried to take the top position again on lap 12. Weaver was loose as he exited turn two. Ballou dove to the inside of him. The two ran side-by-side down the backstretch and into turns three and four. Weaver was able to get the advantage as they exited turn four. Ray Weaver, Wayne's brother, was able to get around Ballou on lap 18 to take over second. Ray was unable to challenge Wayne for the lead. The brothers finished one-two as Wayne went on to take the checkered flag. Ballou ended up third, followed by defending points champion John Burch in fourth, and Chet Gagnon in fifth. Wayne Weaver and Rodney Holt won the heats. This coming weekend, there will be no racing action at Potomac Speedway as the National Motorcross is in town. The racing will resume on Friday June 23rd, for the fifth 40-lap $2,000 to win Budweiser Late Model I.T.S.I. feature. The regular show will also be on hand, along with Big Wheels races for the kids and the rained-out 30 lap Gardiner Outdoor Products Enduro Stocks .
