FIRST HEAT

Rodney Combs was never threatened in winning from the outside pole position while Bill Frye finished second after dropping back early in the race. Frye started third but dropped to fifth on the first lap before fighting past Wendell Wallace and then making nice moves in Turns 3 and 4 to pass C.S. Fitzgerald and Johnny Johnson, who ended up spinning on the sixth lap and finished back in the pack. Fitzgerald held on to finish third, fighting off several challenges from Wendell Wallace. Defending race champion Donnie Moran finished a lackluster sixth.

Jimmy Mars, Steve Francis and Kris Patterson pulled away comfortably throughout the race to grab the three feature transfer spots. Dale McDowell, the second fastest qualifier of 174 cars, ran fourth most of the way, but dropped off the pace on the second-to-last lap (McDowell was assured a feature starting spot by virtue of his qualifying time). Jack Boggs was among the drivers eliminated in wrecks. Boggs was knocked out of the race on the second lap when he got sideways after a Turn-2 collision with Randle Chupp, then was hit in the driver's side door by Audie McWilliams. Tony Izzo exited on the ninth lap after his car swerved and slammed into the fourth-turn wall. FEATURE QUALIFIERS: Jimmy Mars, Steve Francis, Kris Patterson. Troy Green stayed ahead of the fray and kept a comfortable lead over second-place Terry Phillips to win. Rick Eckert bobbled in Turn 3 late in the race, but repelled an aggressive challenge from Freddy Smith to hold on to the third and final transfer spot. Eckert had blasted into the third spot on the second lap with a smooth move on the backstretch after Bryan Dunaway and Paul Harris temporarily got together coming out of Turn 2, finished in the final transfer spot. Dunaway rallied toward the end of the race, getting past Smith with an outside pass to finish fourth. Early in the race, Larry Moore, Barry Bragdon and Paul Davis (who suffered heavy left-side damage) were eliminated in a Turn-3 wreck.

Rick Aukland won by a couple of car lengths ahead of Billy Moyer, who struggled for 12 laps before finally getting past surprising polesitter Mark Voigt. While Aukland ran up front, Voigt drove smartly for a dozen circuits in second with Moyer trying vainly to get past the two-time UMP points runner-up. Finally, Moyer slipped under Voigt between Turns 3 and 4. When Moyer moved past, Voigt was forced into the rough high side of the track, and his nose got caught up under his left-front wheel and sent him to the pits. Tim Hitt inherited the third spot to advance to the feature. Jerry Rice held off Bart Hartman in a lively battle for fourth.

Skip Arp and Ronnie Johnson ran smoothly to finish first and second, but they didn't get to see the best heat action of the night. A battle for the third and final feature transfer spot raged behind them among Steve Barnett, Kevin Weaver, John Gill and Charlie Swartz battled for several laps until Barnett finally survived the onslaught. The wild action was often three-wide, and reached a crescendo on the 12th lap when Weaver slid under Barnett in Turn 3 but got too high and allowed Barnett to reclaim the spot as the pair traded grooves twice in less than half a lap. Gill managed a last-lap pass of Weaver to finish fourth. Swartz, who often drove so low that he launched of the concrete pads near the inner wall, dropped out late in the race.

Scott Bloomquist was the only driver to overcome the six-car inversion, winning in dominating fashion from his sixth starting position. Bloomquist roared past Delmas Conley to take the lead on the fourth lap. Clint Smith broke away from a three-wide dead heat for second on the fifth lap to finish as the runner-up, while Willy Kraft grabbed the third feature transfer spot. Outside polesitting Conley led the first three laps but faded throughout the race. Rick DeLong was notable for finishing fifth from his seventh-row starting spot. Polesitter R.J. Conley, Delmas' son, blew a tire, pitted and ended up eighth. Several cars dropped out early, including Bob Salathe and Darrell Lanigan after a Turn-2 collision that saw Lanigan's car briefly climb on top of Salathe's No. RG3.

R.J. Conley led every lap, holding off a charge from Ray Cook to lead the six cars advancing to the B-main race. Lance Matthees, Bill Hahn, Brian Stinson and Frank Reaber were the others to transfer to final consolation. The racing was spread out and mostly uneventful with several drivers skipping the race and four others eliminated in a first-turn accident as Mike Duvall got out of shape and collected Wayne Maffett Jr., Rusty Misner and Mark Miner.

Last year's Dream champion Donnie Moran outdueled Randle Chupp for the 15-lap victory. Jerry Rice and Brian Birkhofer held on to the third and fourth spots to complete the four drivers transferring to the feature. In a spectacular accident early in the race, Scott Sexton spun wildly in Turn 4 and his car bounded into the air, coming down on top of Kevin Weaver's speeding machine. Neither driver was injured. Freddy Smith and Bart Hartman were eliminated when Smith lost control in Turn 2 and Hartman had nowhere to go.

Wendell Wallace took his guaranteed starting spot in the feature by virtue of his fast qualifying time and skipped the B-main .... Bryan Dunaway was racing on his 36th birthday .... qualifying began about 2:05 p.m. and ended at 4 p.m. .... the track stayed consistent throughout qualifying with some of the last qualifiers recording some of the best times .... Troy Vanderveen and H.E. Vineyard were among drivers making contact with the wall in qualifying ....
