Ice Chips by Debi Domby

Fred Campbell won his first AC Delco/Murray's Iceman Series race of the year at Sandusky Speedway Saturday night. It was a history making races as this was first time in the series 12 years existence that the feature was started straight-up. The race took an hour and 45 minutes to run because of a season high 11 cautions.

The semi-banked 1/2 mile track had recently been resurfaced with a sealer which made for some fast lap times. Eight cars surpassed the old Iceman track record of 17.64 set in July 95 by Fred Campbell. The fastest of the field was Scott Baker who shattered the old record with a 17.37. Also breaking the old record were: Fred Campbell, Claude Plante Jr, Jeremy Reilley, Dave Kuhlman, Don St. Denis and Len Couvillon. The two support divisions also set new track records.

Veteran driver Fred Campbell, who shared the front row with polesitter Scott Baker, inherited the lead on lap 54 when Baker's car broke. Campbell, aboard his Port City Racing Monte Carlo, had Dave Kuhlman glued to his rear bumper for the remaining laps. At one point, the pair had more than a half lap lead on the rest of the field.

A couple of cautions in the final 10 laps allowed Glenn Gault to join the pair in a three-way battle for the win. Campbell's strong car and a tight semi banked track made it difficult to pass. The win for Campbell breaks a three race streak of finishing third. This was the 1992 series champion's 14th career win, putting him within two races of Dennis Berry on the the career win list.
