Caltex Havoline Racing's Russell Ingall has sold his racing helmet on behalf of the Starlight Children's Foundation for $8000.

The two-time Bathurst winner handed over the cheque to the Starlight Foundation's Development Manager, Gordana Pilgram, today, in the first of several activities planned this week to celebrate Ingall's 100th round start in the V8 Supercar Championship Series.

Ironically the helmet was sold to a Perth-based fan, who will actually collect the prized piece of Australian motorsport memorabilia during the fifth round of the V8 Supercar Series at Barbagallo Raceway in Western Australia this weekend.

"I have auctioned a couple of helmets previously, but the result this time around has been fantastic," said Ingall.

"I think everyone at Caltex and Stone Brothers Racing got a great buzz watching the price rising higher and higher, knowing that every cent was going to the Starlight Children's Foundation.

"Caltex has been a great supporter of the foundation for many years and I was delighted to do my little bit.

"We have already started planning some bigger and better things to support next year's fundraising drive."

Ms Pilgrim said the money raised will benefit a host of children of all ages.

"We are extremely delighted by this donation, which will be used to grant the wishes of many seriously ill children," said Ms Pilgrim.

"We obviously have to thank Caltex, Stone Brothers Racing and in particular Russell Ingall for nominating the Starlight Children's Foundation as the beneficiary of these funds.

"I am sure the winning bidder will get great enjoyment from the helmet and we have to also thank them for their generosity."

Since its inception in 1988, the Starlight Children's Foundation has brightened the lives seriously ill and hospitalised children and their families throughout Australia and Caltex Australia has been a major supporter of the foundation for several years.

Over 600,000 children will be hospitalised in the next 12 months and 6,000 will be diagnosed with a serious illness. Starlight's programs currently reach about 200,000 seriously ill children and their families, which is why the funds raised from this year's national campaign are vital to expand Starlight's entertainment programs to reach more children.
