Four aborted starts, three wrecked cars, and two red flags after the planned start of the IndyCar race, officials decided to let Mother Nature win the day. The main concern is too much spray on Lake Shore Blvd.
People need to consider that this is dangerous
Tony Kanaan on track conditions
Drivers ran 13 laps behind the pace car (which spun as well) before the cars were brought down pit road and the event was placed under red flag conditions.
IndyCar will run two races tomorrow as a result of this cancellation. The first will go green with a rolling start at 10:30am (est.) and the second will have a standing start, getting underway at 4:15pm. The starting order for the second race will be determined by points.
Not a single official lap was run, by today certainly wasn't without controversy.
Will Power lost control and crashed while running second as the field rounded the final corner and prepared to go racing. IndyCar officials allowed the Penske team to repair the car under the red flag, confusing A.J. Foyt and infuriating Michael Andretti. Andretti was adamant that they were in violation of the rules and that they shouldn't be allowed to work on the car.
Tony Kanaan was quoted as saying, "People need to consider that this is dangerous right now. We can not race in these conditions." Helio Castroneves later added that if a car were to spin on the backstretch and no one saw him due to the low visibility and rooster tails, the result could be catastrophic.
