Beasley, Quinlan each win two at Wednesday Daytona Man Cup

12.29.2010 - Sam Beasley went two for four and Grant Quinlan went two for three to lead all racers during the first of two days of racing at the Margay Sprint Championships at Daytona Int'l Speedway.

Eleven classes ran practice, qualifying, pre-finals and finals throughout the day. Six divisions needed to consolations to bring their fields down to 34 starters. The final class, Komet Sportsman, ended just as the sun was going down on The World Center of Racing.

Feature action began just past 3 p.m. with Woltjer Racing Engines Yamaha Supercan Heavy's 18 entrants taking the green. Cole Nelson gave race sponsor Margay a nice start to the racing with a 0.275-second win over Beasley, who was closing throughout the last several laps. Nelson and Beasley were over two seconds ahead of third-place Shinya Michimi at the finish. Dakota Pesek took fourth and Tony Jump rounded out the top five.

RLV Tuned Exhaust Products Cadet Final 1 saw the Canadian Quinlan wheel his Birel to a convincing win over California's Zane Smith. Quinlan ran strong all day, posting top qualifying times and winning pre-finals in the three classes he entered. Smith edged Emerson Reed for second. David Malukas and Kyle Tilley were right there in fourth and fifth. Sixth through 10th read Leonardo Stoia, Austin Garrison, Jared Cordova, Tristan VanWieringen and Tazio Torregiani.

Tennessee resident Jeff Jewell halted Chad Kruger's dominating day in Yamaha Masters. After Kruger qualified first and won the pre-final, he faded late in the 12-lap main, falling victim to a strong running Jewell and Kevin Nelson. Jewell, who was riding a sharp-looking Corsa chassis, won by 1.1 seconds over Nelson. Kruger was third, Scot Carapellatti fourth and Hector Rodriguez fifth.

Jacob Donald was strong all day on his Arrow and drove to a feature victory in SCS Racing Komet Jr Heavy over Logan Bearden. Donald was 2.6 seconds ahead of Bearden at the stripe; Austin Self took third, Joel Jens fourth and Ashley Rogero made it from a deep starting spot to take fifth. Sixth through 10th read James Bennett, Corey Towles, Cameron Meek, Andrew Bujdoso and Austin Osborne. Donald won on an Arrow.

Comet Kart Sales Yamaha Sportsman Heavy was the fifth final out. The usual suspects in the Sportsman divisions again rose to the top with Quinlan besting Reed in a close race for the victory. Zane Smith took third, Jared Cordova drove a strong race to take fourth and Tristan VanWieringen rounded out the top five. Sixth through 10th were Ryan Raffa, Tilley, Matt Solarczyk, Jacob Zellner and Kaleb Allison.

Beasley won his first of the day with a big win in Franklinkart.com TaG 1. Beasley won the 12-lapper in his first senior weekend at a WKA national. Beasley also qualified fastest and won the pre-final. Robert Bujdoso was the only driver to finish within one second of the Ohio driver. Bujdoso was 0.410 seconds back at the finish. Atlanta's Chris Wehrheim was third in his return to WKA national action; Mason Chelootz took fourth and Wes Phillips was the last slot in the top five. John Dixon ran top three early but faded late, finishing sixth. Tommy Andersen was seventh and Cody Gardner eighth. Jamie McMurray crossed the stripe sixth but was penalized two seconds for scuffing tires on the warm-up lap. McMurray was credited with ninth. Pennsylvania's Kyle Smith rounded out the top 10 in his first TaG national affair.

Logan Bearden halted the Arrow dominance in the junior classes with his win on a Haase in Kartsport North America Yamaha Jr Lite. Bearden went wire to wire for the victory. Austin Self was second, 0.225 seconds back. Joel Jens took third, Derek Sobel fourth, Jeffrey Bartz fifth. Sixth through 10th read Ian Tilbor, Gresham Wagner, Garrett Johnston, Mike McAndrews and Jeff Myers Jr.

New Jersey Sprint Series Yamaha Rookie Sportsman debuted at WKA Man Cup and David Ilavia dominated the race in a Birel. But Ilavia was disqualified in tech for an engine infraction. That gave the win to Jack W Miller, who was also on a Birel. Grant Griesbach was second, Evan Cowen third, Caleb Tate fourth and Jamie Williams fifth. Fifteen youngsters started.

All eyes were back to the track when Grand Products / TopKart Parilla Leopard went out as the ninth final of the day. Again it was Beasley flexing his muscle with a 2.3-second win over Wehrheim. Arie Ouimet was third and McMurray had his best run of the day to take fourth. Jacob Knueven was fifth, Bujdoso sixth, Sean Meier seventh, Chelootz eighth, Andersen ninth and Billy Lewis 10th. A.J. Allmendinger qualified fourth but made contact at the start and spun off turn one. Allmendinger recovered in the final to finish 16th in the 34-kart field.

TSRacing.com Komet Heavy saw Chelootz deny Beasley of a third win on the day. Chelootz wheeled his Top Kart to a convincing win, going wire to wire and never letting Beasley within two seconds. Beasley was second, while Corey Reeves ran second early but settled for third. Ryan Stewart was fourth and Bill McLaughlin Jr. fifth.

Kyle Tilley went from third to first on the final corner to win Adkins Speed Center Komet Sportsman. Tilley ran third for most of the race behind Zane Smith and Quinlan. Smith and Quinlan came together at the final corner on the last lap, allowing Tilley to scoot by. The finishing order was Tilley, Smith, Quinlan, but that is unofficial as a penalty may have been levied on Smith. We don't have that information at this time. Reed crossed the stripe fourth and Solarczyk fifth.

Nine classes will hit the track tomorrow for the final day of Daytona KartWeek. They are Yamaha Supercan Heavy, Cadet Final 2, TaG 2, Komet Jr Lite, Yamaha Rookie Final 2, TaG Masters, Komet Lite, Yamaha Sportsman Lite and Yamaha Jr Heavy.

There were 685 entrants at the Man Cup track at about 9 a.m. Wednesday, which is up well over 100 entries from last year's total.

Robinson bags $2,000 with Money Race win at Dirt World Championships

12.29.2010 - Nine classes hit the track during the second of three race days at the Firestone Dirt World Championships at the Daytona Flat Track. Over 150 entries on the day made it the largest one-day turnout since WKA returned to Daytona for dirt racing last year.

Inox Lubricants / JBs Race Team-sponsored Chris Robinson walked away as the big winner with his triumph in the night's final class, the Animal Heavy Money Race. Robinson started second and drove past pole-sitter Brian Hunter on the second lap.

Arguably the hottest dirt karter in the country Shay Chavous worked past Hunter for second just past halfway in the 20-lapper and set sail for Robinson. Chavous closed at times but Robinson proved too strong and the Florida driver held on for a 0.8-second win over Georgia's Chavous. Mike Dickerson was third, Justin Dopson fourth and C.J. Leary rounded out the top five.

Hunter spun off turn two with only a handful of laps left and ended up 17th. Robinson earned a cool $2,000 for the win, Chavous took home $440 for second. The race ended with a great fireworks display put on by Kart Show promoter Allen Redman.

Beginning with the start of the day, fan favorite Chris Throckmorton wheeled his Phantom to a popular win in Al's Kart Supply Stock Medium. Throckmorton won comfortably over Justin Dopson, who started deep in the 30-kart field. Bradley Hauser had his best run of the weekend thus far with a third-place result. Donnie Nall was fourth and Chavous fifth. Throckmorton earned $300 for the win and an AKS RaceFab bodywork package. The purse was put up by the good folks at Ultramax Racing Chassis.

Dillen Brown won easily over Alabama's Connor Okrzesik in Shadow Racing Chassis Sportsman 1 Heavy. Brayden Houpt was third, William Prince fourth and Garrett Rahn fifth. Brown earned $300 for the win.

Brad Bowman won the first champ-kart main of the week with his triumph in Jr Champ. Bowman won over Georgia's Spencer Davis. Florida's Ty DeCaire was third, Jerrod Holle fourth and Hannah Riser fifth.

A wild Champ Lite main went to North Carolina's Cameron Reese. Reese won by nearly a half second over Greg Fields. Don Large was third, Jason Lineweaver fourth and Chris Fahed fifth. Eighteen karts started the main.

Shay Chavous continued his domination in the 2-cycle ranks with a big 10-second win over Gregg Jones in Tommy's Karts-N-Parts Unlimited 2-Cycle. Chavous lapped everyone but Jones in the 10-kart field. Timothy Tafl was third, Michael Nicosia fourth and Wayne Howe fifth.

Randy Brundage scored a win for the Empire State in RLV Tuned Exhaust Products Masters. Brundage passed Mike Dickerson late in the 20-lapper and held Dickerson off throughout the final few circuits to earn the win. Joseph Hartman followed the top two across the line. Greg Fields was fourth and John Hoffman fifth.

Alex Cline was the winner in the nine-kart Box Stock Senior, which paid $300 to win thanks to Ultramax. Cline bested CKI driver David Ingle for the win. Carl Whitehouse was third, Clint Riley fourth and Ron Little Jr. fifth. Charlie Sox qualified on the pole but had mechanical issues and did not take the green flag.

Virginia's Alexander Barfield stepped it up a lot at Daytona this year and drove to a big win in Maxxis Tires Sportsman 2 Heavy. Barfield held off Tuesday Sportsman 2 winner R.L. Anderson for the win in a close and exciting race. Sean Hamilton was third, Zachary Wells fourth and Austin Carter fifth. Barfield scored the $300 prize for his win, which was put up by Ultramax.

One day remains at the Firestone Dirt World Championships. Thursday will see seven classes hit the track, comprising Ultramax Racing Chassis Stock Heavy, Sportsman 2 Champ, Jr Sportsman 1 Box Stock, Jr Heavy, Dixie Karting Raptor Lite, Sportsman 1 Champ and Champ Heavy. Stock Heavy, Jr Heavy and Champ Heavy pay $300 to win and $150 for second.
