Kahne completed 33 laps, but his fastest was 160.506mph.
“It’s good so far,” Kahne said. “We made some changes to make it a little bit better. We’ve had a little practice and hopefully we’ll get a little more. (The track) is going to change a lot today then more than likely it will rain a some more tonight. It’s just the type of weekend we’re living right now.
“So I think when the race starts tomorrow it might be fairly similar to how it is right now. From then over 400 laps here, the track will change a lot. With it being cooler, I just wonder if the rubber will feel a little differently when it was warmer out.”
The Joe Gibbs Toyotas of Carl Edwards (160.442 mph) and Denny Hamlin (160.285 mph) posted the second and third fastest laps followed by Kevin Harvick, who was supposed to serve a 15-minute penalty for multiple trips through inspection at New Hampshire Motor Speedway last weekend. However, NASCAR deferred the No. 4 team’s penalty until next weekend at Charlotte due to the shortened time for practice.
Of the 12 drivers who completed ten consecutive laps, Kahne was once again the fastest with an average speed of 158.755mph.
Aric Almirola set the fastest time for Fords with a lap of 159.943 mph, followed by Chase contenders Brad Keselowski, Kurt Busch, Jimmie Johnson, Matt Kenseth and Jamie McMurray.
The Sprint Cup cars entered the track at 11:50 a.m. and ran for 26 minutes and three-seconds before the session was cut short for the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East finale.
