Xavier Coupal wins Round 4 of the Micra Cup at Mont-Tremblant
Xavier Coupal scored a convincing victory on Sunday in Round 4 of the Canadian Nissan Micra Cup held at the Mont-Tremblant circuit in Québec.
Reigning Micra Cup champion, Xavier Coupal (Micra No. 1), captured pole position with a time of 2:02.499. His teammate Olivier Bédard, the inaugural Cup champion (Micra No. 99), qualified second, almost half a second slower than Coupal.
Stefan Gauthier (Micra No. 96) set the third fastest time ahead the Metod Topolnik (Micra No. 78) - always quick at Mont-Tremblant - Kevin King (Micra No. 40) and Jean Michel Isabelle (Micra No. 86) who received a three-spot penalty on the grid after having been found guilty of a avoidable accident with Coupal during yesterday’s race.
It was hot and sunny when the 21 Micras completed their formation lap around the Mont-Tremblant rollercoaster. At the green, Coupal and Bédard immediately engaged in an intense battle for the lead. The Total/Albi duo began to pull away from the rest of the field.
A five-car train
On lap six, the fight began for third place involving Gauthier, Topolnik, King, Valérie Limoges and Australian Keishi Ayukai. The five cars ran as a tight pack, and sometimes door-handle to door-handle.
Limoges, who had claimed third place in yesterday’s race, was again running a strong race. By Lap 9, she took third from Kevin King.
