Auburndale Speedway results 99-05-15

Mitch Hawk Jr. Wins First in Limited Late Model Sportsman.

Auburndale, FL: Mitch Hawk Jr. won his first feature of the season and = his first ever in Limited Late Model Sportsman in the No. 17. Hawk took = a big step during the off season, moving from Street Stock to the = Limited Lates, with some early season success in the form of 2 heat = wins, but scored big Saturday night with a heat win and the 25 lap = feature win. Hawk started on the pole and led all the way, but was = constantly hounded by several different cars as positions changed behind = him. Wendell Guy in the No. 31, Westley Bass in the No. 63 and Ray = Cuzzone in the No.97 were the early challengers, but on lap 13, Guy lost = control down the back stretch, involving Bass and Cuzzone. All three = cars went to the pits with only Bass able to return to the track. Robbie = Storer made his way from the seventh row at the green flag to finish = second in the No. 07, followed by Steve Ware in the No. 02, Brian Storer = in the 15, and Richard Elkins Jr. in the No. 55. Ware started the event = in 8th, B. Storer in 12th, and Elkins in 14th. Hawk and Guy won their = heat races.

In the 25 lap Modified Mini Stock feature, Mike Rudder started the No. 0 = Charger in 9th and came through the field to take the lead on lap 11 = from the No. 1 of Pops Weatherford, Weatherford had lead from the green. = Rudder stayed on the point the rest of the way for his third win of the = season. Randy Storer started the event 5th and seemed to struggle with = his No. 90 early in the race, but was second at the checkered flag. Mike = Lawhorn had another good finish, bring the No. 44 home in third, = followed by Tony Davidson in the No. 53, and Don Ezell in the No. 19. = Davidson was 14th at the green, and Ezell started 6th; but an early race = incident saw Ezell go to the back on a restart and come through the = field to take the fifth place honors. Rudder and Ezell won their heats.

The Street Stock 25 lap feature went to Michael King in the No. 96. King = had just added a new sponsor and returned their faith in him with a heat = race and feature win. With lineups determined by average points over the = last four races, King benefited from some problems in the last few weeks = with an outside second row starting position, but was clearly the class = of the field, leading by as much as a straightaway at times. Billy = Jones, driving the No. 18, started on the pole and battled with Donnie = Harp, who started outside the front row, throughout the race, finishing = second, with Harp, in the no. 31, coming home third. Johnny Gamble = brought the No. 86 home in fourth, and Steve Ware, doing double duty in = his own No. 95, was fifth. Heats were won King and Jones.

The V8 Pure Stock 15 lap feature had 22 cars start the event, and 7th = starting Greg Bacon took the win in the No. 60. Bob Gorsuch took the = early lead in his No.69 and battled Bacon for several laps before Bacon = was able to get around for the lead on lap 12. Gorsuch finished second, = followed by Johnny Vaughn in the No. 77, up from a 12th starting = position. Robin O'Neal started the No. 24 in 20th and took fourth, while = Brian Eden rounded out the top five in the No. 44. Heat winners were = Dustin Breeden in the No.80 and Gorsuch.

Chris Narramore, in the No. 16 Charger, won his fourth Pure Stock 4 = Cylinder feature of the season in a special 30 lap event. The feature = lineup was determined by finishing positions in the heat races, putting = Mat Craig on the pole in his No. 56, and Narramore on the outside of the = front row. Craig jumped out to the early lead, and was able to open up a = several car length opening between himself and Narramore. On lap 20, = Craig suddenly slowed and pulled into the infield, done for the night. = Narramore led the last 10 laps for the win. In the meantime, Joe Thomas = had worked his No. 25 up to the third position, inheriting second when = Craig broke. Timmy McKenzie turned on the jets in the last few laps, and = when the white flag waved, he was right with Thomas. The two went into = the third turn side by side, Thomas on the inside, McKenzie on the = outside, with McKenzie taking second by inches at the finish line. Greg = Case was fourth in the No. 54 and Mark Soule was fifth in the No. 76.

Super Mini Cups invaded Auburndale again with Chris Fontaine of Lakeland = winning the heat and feature. Doug Smith of Valrico was second, Bruce = Smith of Wildwood third, Terry Tullis of Bartow fourth, and Josh Hermann = of Kissimmee fifth.

This coming Saturday, May 22th, Auburndale hosts Limited Late Model = Sportsman, Modified Mini Stocks, Street Stocks, Four Cylinder Pure = Stocks, Pure Stock V-8's. Also on the schedule are the Allison Legacy = Cars and Kids Club.
