NASCAR Veteran Mike Wallace Sees Another Win Slip Away
As Fans Cheer Hardee's Summer Shootout School Bus Battle

CONCORD, N.C. (July 13, 2004) - NASCAR veteran Mike Wallace saw victory slip from his grasp for the second time in four days while second-generation racer David Ragan of Kannapolis, N.C., recorded his first Legends Car Pro division victory during round five of the Hardee's Summer Shootout Tuesday night at Lowe's Motor Speedway.

After running out of gas while leading Saturday's NASCAR Busch Series race near Chicago, Wallace was involved in a torrid three-bus battle during the closing stages of the 10-lap School Bus slobberknocker presented by The Window Pro's.

Often wheeling the behemoth creations three wide through the corners of the tight quarter-mile oval, Wallace battled with Jeff Marshall representing the U.S. Air Force Reserves and veteran SCCA sports car racer Dave Berry.

Marshall used an inside move to take the lead on the final lap and beat Wallace to the stripe by less than half a bus length. Wacky FOX Charlotte weatherman Mark Mathis was expected to be among the contenders, but his hopes deflated when one of his four rear tires exploded early in the race.

Fresh from his runner-up finish in Saturday's ARCA RE/MAX Series stock car race at Kentucky Speedway, Ragan, son of former NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series driver Ken Ragan, started sixth and cruised to victory in the 20-lap finale for the Tom Johnson Camping Center Legends Car Pro division. Michael Van Wingerden led early, but had to settle for runner-up honors with Beau Slocumb next across the stripe.

In the 20-lap feature for the Quaker Steak& Lube Thunder Roadsters, Michael Van Wingerden of Huntersville, N.C., emerged from a five-car battle to score his second victory of the season. Andrew Rogers settled for runner-up honors while Ryan Zeck charged from the last starting spot in the 20-car field to claim third.

Scott Knox of Cornelius, N.C., climbed atop the victory podium for the first time this season, winning the crash-filled 20-lap feature for the Raceape.com Legends Car Semi-Pro division. Knox started ninth in the 28-car field, took the lead on lap 18 and beat C.E. Falk III and Chris Rogers to the checkered flag.

In one of the best races of the season, John Sossoman of New London, N.C., passed Clay Hair on the final lap to win the 20-lap feature for the Holiday Inn University Legends Car Masters division.

Sossoman battled George "Cotton" Spry for the lead as Hair methodically worked to the front from the eighth-starting position. Hair drove around Sossoman with just three laps remaining, but Sossoman was not to be denied. He drove back around Hair exiting turn two and extended his point lead with his third victory of the season. Hair settled for second with Spry third in the division for drivers ages 40 and over.

Devon Haun of Hiddenite, N.C., was the top survivor in a wild 20-lap feature for the Cabarrus Family Medicine Bandolero Young Guns. In a race that saw contenders Nicholas Pope, Brandon McReynolds and Jake Crum encounter problems, Haun charged from the 14th starting position to claim his first victory of the season. Jordan Penninger chased Haun under the checkered flag with point leader Tyler Green third in the division for drivers ages 12 to 15.

Cole Miktuk of Rock Hill, S.C., recorded his first victory of the season in the caution-filled feature for the TopChoice for Fire Ants Bandolero Bandits. Miktuk took the top spot on lap seven after leader Ryan Glenski was sent spinning by Darrell Wallace Jr. Chad Akins crossed the stripe second followed by Kyle Fowler as the race for drivers ages 8 to 11 was shortened to 15 laps due to time constraints.

Hickory, N.C., resident Ryan Jernigan notched win number two in the 20-lap feature for the Premise Termite Elimination Bandolero Outlaws division. Jernigan started fourth, took the lead on the opening lap and was never seriously challenged. He was followed across the stripe by Chris Morgan and Artie Clever.

The Hardee's Summer Shootout continues Tuesday night, July 20, when the Road Hawgs return for another round of fender-banging excitement. A full slate of Legends Car, Bandolero and Thunder Roadster racing is also on the card.
